View Full Version : A New England Winter ride

My son and I spent a couple hours riding around a nearby pond (Lake for you West Coasters). At one time it was a reserve drinking water reseviour and closed off to the public.....though I know many folks who used to hike in here when they were kids during the hot muggy summers to go swimming in the crystal clear waters. Obviously by the condition of the old pump house it's no longer used. The main trail skirts the lake but there are many off-shoots into the surrounding woods and one fourteen mile loop I'm aware of. We had a blast on this ride. Temps were in the low forties and we were the only folks back here except for another lone rider we crossed paths with on our way out back to the Cruiser. We parked at a small park that's about a mile away from the gate since you'll get ticked or possibly towed if you park at the entrance.

. . . in the off season on the carriage roads. There's nobody there but me and it's like the whole place was made just for me to explore. Great feeling . . .

Well done. That's a beautiful spot you have there.
I didn't get the memo about winter being canceled this year but that's what upstate NY looks like now too.
I'm doing more riding than I ever have during the winter.

Is that Carr Pond, William?

I thought a local would figure that out. Well done!

It's great having the place all to yourself!!

Yes, this Winter has been pretty mild and I've been getting out on the road/trails a lot more then in the past.

Good to see you enjoying the almost ATMO approve bike!

Beautiful pics. Not a bad way to spend a "winter" day.

Looks kinda like our atypical version of winter here in southeast Minnesota. My only bike is strictly road - no fenders, 23 tires, etc - so my only chance to ride is when there's no snow or ice on the roads. I already have 100 miles the first four days of February (in addition to a couple hundred in January), and it looks like I'll get out today and tomorrow as well.

I know those waters well.. having spent the last 5 years in PVD. It obviously looks like a lot of New England woods, but the island in the middle of the pond, and then the pipeline gave it away.

Anytime you get the chance to ride with your son is a great day. I have to wait till Memorial Day Weekend for that. Thanks for posting photos of your rides.

Sure looks like road bike territory to me, buffed dirt road riding, perfect. Unless you rode the pipe. That could be iffy with skinny tires. A friend has a similar Toyota but with a huge diesel motor. Nothing electronic at all. Has a reservoir so big he's good for something like 3500 kms and that's in the desert of North Africa. Totally equipped for the desert including kitchen, bed, survival stuff, getting unstuck stuff, tires inside the tires so he can deflate the exterior tire for the sand or something like that. Crazy rig, makes enormous noise. Finished 3rd in the Paris-Dakar race many years ago in his class so he knows what he's doing out there. Awesome rig.

Don't let the pictures fool you, there were some smooth sections but most of it is rock under leaves and rocks & sand. A road bike wouldn't cut it without walking and even a cross bike will be jarring in many sections.

My cruiser is a DD and a mild expedition rig in the making. I don't do any hardcore wheeling or mud bogging but I like to take into areas that most rigs can't go for hiking, camping, and mtb'ing.

Remind me NOT to go for a ride with you. :p

I would need very fat tires for that stuff.

But like one of your posts says, you ride anywhere.!

Some good shots there William, Big Fun in this mild winter!
