From something Fausto Coppi may have said... words by Max Leonard.

The motivation to get out on the road might be falling but remember: there’s more to life than two hours at a steady 125bpm on the turbo, watching Tour DVDs, like a hamster on a wheel. Gravel and snot, and a cold nose, maybe. But also fresh air in the lungs and, perhaps, a view glimpsed through bare branches, never seen riding that road in summer. Steam rising off your companions' head as they take their hats off. Tea and cake, or a bacon sarnie, in a noisy, packed cafe.

Think back, to a man imprisoned in the heat, pining for cold solitary kilometres, and get out there on your bike.

Steam rising off your companions' head as they take their hats off. They should be wearing helmets.

Tea and cake, or a bacon sarnie, in a noisy, packed cafe.Or a pint of Guinness. What's a "sarnie," by the way?

Think back, to a man imprisoned in the heat, pining for cold solitary kilometres, and get out there on your bike.I like cold solitary miles, cold solitary kilometres not so much. :)

"I ran across this photo of Fausto Coppi, his brother and some other professional riders out for a training ride. Back in the day, even professional racers wore regular clothes on training rides instead of their wool jersey’s and shorts. I did not know this until I found this photo and looked into it a bit more."

Got me out for thirty miles.......30-33 degrees, dodging some combinations of ice, water rivulets, sand and salt, here and there.....otherwise smoooth sailing.

Thought I'd warm the feet when they started to get cold with six, well spaced, moderate sprints and ended up throwing in another close to home when eddy jumped me out of a passing barnyard.....nothing like a little excitement and a break from the ski trail and it's inadequate snow!?

Thanks for sharing Tom....hope you had the time to get out and roll.

Great post. Got 23 miles in slightly foggy 32 degree weather in Southeast MN this afternoon. Roads were damp in places, but fortunately didn't encounter any ice. Three straight days of riding - on a road bike with 23s - in Minnesota in February. Now that's living!

I had that kind of a ride yesterday. Found a couple of new roads, one that petered out into gravel, then mud, then a girder bridge that was falling into a creek. I'd seen the bridge from the other side before, pic is from a summer ride.
55 miles of snot, cold nose and especially hands, only a couple miles of gravel, and some local history. The last 8 miles well after dark, in fog so thick you couldn't see a street light 1000' away.

That bridge pic is beautiful. It's just a bit shy of 60 here today. Probably too cold to ride, I'm thinking. [ducks]

And they were still faster than we are on a bike even after smoking a cigar and having a bottle of vino. .

Crumbling Infrastructure. Peter Egan wrote a piece in Road and Track 20 years about a similar bridge near his house. I've seen that one and it looks much safer, but it's not as picturesque as this one. 100 years ago we could afford to build them, but not now. Glad you liked the pic, hope you found time to ride.
