My Rock Lobster was powdercoated by Maas Brothers Powdercoating (http://www.maasbrothersinc.com/) .
Since that's Paul Sadoff's powdercoater of choice, I presume he has a good relationship with them and trusts their work. That also means they know the special needs of bicycle frames. I had a glitch in my Rock Lobster's new finish and they corrected it without a complaint.
That's a matte finish and the top tube is ribbed. That explains what you're seeing:

A really nice pearl. I have seen some pretty beautiful finishes done with powder. All in all it never compares to a quality paint job - but then again its a fraction of the cost depending on what you have in mind.

Pick any Speedvagen.
Not all Speedvagens are powder.
Look at any of my seven DeSalvo's.

For the record, you get what u paid for in PC, with wet paint is the same.
Got a 50 bucks PC paint job a few years ago, was awefully bad :D Had to strip the paint off and paint the darn frame myself.

As always, the difference is in the prep. Powdercoating is a lot harder to screw up than painting (you can't get drips or lay layers on too thick, etc), but both require equally intensive prep. Like the $50 paint job, the $50 powdercoater saves time by skipping the prep. Both can come out nice if spend the time to prep it yourself.
Moral of the story is, prep early, prep often.

More than just a single color. Never would have guessed this was possible.

Recently powdered Schwinn Crosscut frame. Done local, cheap, effective, and not a half bad job if I do say so myself.

Still need to take more detail photos outside. The dark color is hard to photograph.
I'm assuming that the choice for powdercoat is driven by cost. Correct? What does a decent powdercoat job cost?
Also, one poster noted that the difference in results is attributable to prep work. Can this be done by the owner to save money?

Mostly single color designs so far.
This is a nice one...all the logos are done in powder!

Not just cost. Powdercoating is supposedly more durable and less prone to chipping than regular paint.

These are all mighty fine looking frames. I have an older steel frame that I'm considering getting PC'd, but I'm also fond of the nice white panel on the down tube that displays the name of the maker. Can a painter mask off the panel somehow and just PC the rest of the frame? Or is it a sort of all or nothing deal with prep and paint? Any insight welcome.

You can just not put powder on the area, but the powder is baked I dunno how much heat wet paint can take. Why don't you just have a new panel put on?

Cost, mostly -- trying to minimize the add-ons that can jack the price. Time to just go talk to the painter, methinks.

My powder coater charges 25 euro for panels..that would bring the total cost to 135 euro for a single color with panels. The charge 40 euro for decals so 175 euro and everything is brand new..I don't believe you'll find wet paint for that
