View Full Version : Does anybody ride with a beard?

The helmet issue has been head banged to death. Now something important. I have a 2 month growth on my face now. It is almost as long as it was when it went on a bike tour. Yes, it was it's own entity and I came along for the ride.

Anyway, anybody ride with facial hair? Full Beard? Goatee? Mustache? And, if you do are your legs shaved too?

A friend of mine races with a fairly long beard, but he's in a country band.

I shave my face on occasion to scare fewer people. I shave my legs to make road rash easier to deal with.

Guns don't kill people, facial hair does, and society is left with the tax burden.

Come to grips with the consequences of your actions and shave....Gillette Fusion is my shaving steed of choice. I am keeping my eyes out for a NOS carbon one.

I have shaving insurance so I am covered and not a burden. Now, mine is not as full as this one but a trackie with a beard is kinda badass.

I stop shaving in October and take off the beard at the end of February or beginning of March. It's nice for the winter. Sometimes I cultivate icicles in the right conditions on a ride. I once had a four incher after a five hour ride. I also shave my legs throughout the winter. Somehow it makes sense.

I had a beard for about 3 months this year.
I'm 52 and my hair is greying but my beard is really grey. A couple of funny things happened:
First, when I would catch up, pass or hang with the young guys in team kit, the looks were priceless.
Second, when the cat 1-2 racers would pass me, pressure was off when they looked at me--just another old guy on a nice bike.
Must admit, it felt good and warm when riding thru 30 degree air.

Hell yeah, gotta stay warm somehow and ice in the beard looks more proper than a Rapha jacket! :p

I grow my beard from end of August until my wife's bday at the end of February--she hates it. No pics on a bike though only skiing.

i've never known my father without a beard. last time he shaved it was his wedding. photos shown he's grown everything from jesus style with pony tail to go with it to barely there (current state) professional old guy beard.

me, i grew my first beard in college (CNY) during the winter and now tend to keep it more often than not. my two year old son has seen me without a beard for about 3 months of his life.

i try to keep it clean and short (a 2-3 on the home trimmer) because it is getting more and more gray these days. don't hate on beards just you can't grow a good one for yourself!

oh, and legs get shaved in the spring, summer, and fall.

I hate shaving, so yes. It is quite a bit longer now than in the summer when temps are above 100.

I have had a full beard for at least 35 years - I hated shaving. I used to shave my legs when I raced.

I'll wait until I buy a recumbent to grow a beard. It's going to be a long wait.

Absolutely. I can't even remember the last time I did not have a beard. Maybe about 20 years ago. Unless you're trying to avoid the "horseshoe" look, you don't shave your head, so why bother shaving your face? Saves time in the morning and really helps in the winter.

There is a local band 'round these parts called "The Beards". All band members have beards to be proud of.

I don't know if they ride bikes, but their most popular song is "If your Dad hasn't got a beard then youv'e got two Mums".

My wife hates seeing me clean shaven, so I always have atleast a goatee. But I mostly race old guys mtb & cyclocross, so I fit in. Shaving legs is probably not necessary but I still do it anyway in season. Feels better to put sunscreen or embro on hairless legs.

Had one for about a year. Couldn't stand the snot. I was always stroking it looking pensive ( steady, its too obvious for you high brow folks). Too much grey, och, I was glad to get rid of it.

When I ride, I ride with a beard. I grew it (badly) when I was about 15-16 and have mostly had it since. I've been down to a goatee a few times, a mustache a few summers, and have shaved it all off 2-3 times, none lasting for more than a few weeks and I think the last time was probably 10-12 years ago. I can't stand the way I look totally clean-shaven. And I hate having to shave regularly and keep things like a goatee or mustache trimmed evenly - amazing how skewed they can get if you're not careful. So, its almost always a full beard. Generally quite trim and neat these days, but it was pretty long and shaggy for several years in my youth. I've always been able to grow a good full one though, since I was probably 18 or so. Some people can't pull off a beard - I can't pull off clean-shaven, but a beard seems like my natural state. Which, of course, it is.

I've never shaved any portion of my legs since I used to play high school football and had to get my ankles taped.

I have dark brown (now slightly graying) hair. When I grew a beard back in college, it was much more red than brown. Didn't like the look but stuck with it for a while, thinking that it was "cool" to have a beard...until friends started jokingly to call me "Redbeard." Then off it came, never to be seen again....

The old college pics do provide some nice entertainment for my kids, though. Red beard, leisure suits for dances, tight (TIGHT) jeans....

Beard helps with the laminar air flow across my chin. I know I'm much faster for having one. :)

There is a government mandate that all recumbent bike riders must have beards (even the women).

currently riding with a beard (well, goatee right now) that I haven't shaved since the giants started winning in the playoffs... After sunday, it can come off.

but I'm also never clean shaven. I take my head and face down with barber's clipper because it's just cheaper than shaving all of it all the time. I'm blonde so it works out that a few days looks like a 5 o'clock shadow.

my legs, however, are shaven.

My beard looks just like his.

I told my wife that I wanted to grow it for a year......she laughed

I started out with a short one and I haven't trimmed it in about two months. :D

Why do so many people "hate shaving"?

You need the MXL of razors!
