What do the professionals here like for clincher cross tires? I have WTB cross wolf 32's on one bike, and like them.

What do you like?

Thanks, Dave

depends on where and what you're racing in... for the dry, hardpack here in SoCal I like Ritchey SpeedMax...

Thanks for the quick reply. I am in Upstate NY and the first few in our local series this past year were swamps. Very rarely will we see a course dry enough to run a semi slick type.

I rode maxxis raze 35's this season in the Quebec cyclocross series and found them pretty great. The tread is pretty much dead on if you only have one set. Only i'll probably go 32's next year.

Clement PDX is pretty nice. HUGE casing.

Schwalbe makes some of the best tires in the biz.

Haven't tried the new Specialized, but heard good things.

Michelin Mud 2 for almost any course. Supple casing, nice tread and larger than the nominal '30' width.

Challenge Fango is my favorite all-rounder

Not the best in deep, soupy mud

I've used Mud 2s mostly, but this year I rode Challenge clinchers (Grifos usually or a Limus in front when particularly muddy). Higher tpi, more supple -- very nice ride, but maybe not as tough or long-lasting.

With latex tubes I can run Grifos well under 30 psi without pinchflatting, and I'm 175lbs +. On one smooth course I raced them at 24/26. Nice.

I only ride on tubs now but from the way you described your conditions I'd say +1 on the Mich Muds. Speedmax in dry clims are great too.

For clinchers, Michelin Mud 2's and don't look back (at the purchase, the price, value, or the competition behind you)!

35's are illegal to race here!

Clement PDX's have worked great as dedicated mud tires, and the Michelin Mud's work well as a reliable all-arounder here in Michigan.

I would advise against any of the Clement clinchers, while their tread is fine, albeit pretty old school, the bead or casing make them prone to rolling off the rim at low pressures.

even in non-UCI races?

I pretty much run tubulars but my everyday wheel when I'm riding the cross bike has clinchers.

I used the Challenge Grifo and Fango this season and LOVED them. They also make the Limus which is a new mud tire but didn't really need it here in Colorado this season. Well the last two races were snowy/muddy but I didn't have any mud tires glued up. Challenge says the Fango is there first mud tire but it is not very aggressive at all.

I have a few different clincher tires that have very little miles on them that I would sell cheap if you need. I have a set of Specialized Captain Tubeless that I ran for a bit on my Mavic Ksyrium set up tubeless and a set of Michelin Jets that I ran tubeless as well. I think I have a few more downstairs that I will have to check on.

Alot of 35mm clinchers measure smaller. Hard to pick one tire for everything. Michelin Muds are the go to clincher for wet conditions. For more of an all around tire Challenge Grifos are very good (I train on this clincher and race the tubular version half the time). Vittoria also makes a good all around clincher in their XG tread.

In the greasy mud we get here in Seattle I like the Hutchinson Bulldogs...if things are firmer I like the Michelin Mud 2s.

Agreed that the Race Ralph clincher are a good choice too.

The Maxxis clinchers measure 33mm, even if they're labeled as a 35mm.
I'm a big fan of their tires: Raze is a really solid all-round tire and I think the Mimo is simply the best cornering cross tire I've ever used - so sticky in high speed turns.
