The high price is full retail. I paid about $140 for mine from Ribble. It's still a lot, but there's a lot of work into the tool. It breaks the chain and peens the joining pin.

You can use just about any ordinary chain tool to break the chain and Park has an 11 speed pin peening tool that's about $40.

Really old chain tools won't properly fit 10 or speed chains. I've got an older Park tool the I've modified to work properly, just by filing the center portion thinner. Without that mod, the back side of the outer plate will not rest properly against the back of the tool.

I'd like to do my own thing whenever I can, but $300.00 seems a little steep.

I've got one that you're welcome to borrow any time, NCB. Just let me know when/if you need it. (By the way, I bought it here or across the hall for ~$75. Still pricey, sure, but it was worth it.)

$75!!! That's a steal!

Anyways, thank you so much for your generosity, but I'm sure I'll find one that it's much cheaper than $300.00

it's a nicely designed tool, i've used it at the lbs, however with the availability of 11-sp quick links it's totally unnecessary to own.

What is 11-sp quick links?

one of these from KMC (someone else makes them too now) for 11-speed chains. any 10-speed chain tool can brake the chain, then use a quick link to join the chain. no fancy pants peening tool needed.

Also worth noting that the quick link costs about the same as a chain pin.

Why is this crank so expensive?

It's just aluminum???

Tool is a very high end, purpose specific tool, made very well. Like a Campagnolo tool kit(I've been using mine for 15 years), good tools aren't cheap.

BUT there are other ways to connect a 11s Campagnolo cain, if the $ makes your knees weak. Pedros, Park, IRD links.

IRD, not 'one use'.

$12

I sell 'em.

And for the other post, you can't just break a 11s(or 10s Campagnolo chain for that matter), after it's been on the bike, and then hook it back together with another Campagnolo pin. Deformed link is the result and a broken chain is 'possible.

You can only press a Campagnolo pin into a 'new' link/plate, as on a new chain.

Another great heads-up save from Old P.

I went through the same thought process and decided to go with the KMC link. Has about 1000 miles on it and has been flawless. You can get a card of 6 for $33 here: http://www.treefortbikes.com/product/333222374285/755/KMC-Missing-Link--11-Speed.html
Free shipping if you get your order to $125, otherwise I've found their shipping still to be pretty reasonable.

So here's the follow-up question: can I use my Campagnolo 10 speed chain tool on a Campagnolo 11 speed chain, without ruining the chain, or not?

Can't mushroom the end but can probably get the pin in with the 10s chain tool.
Can certainly use it to shorten the chain.

The 'keys' to the 11s Campagnolo pin are

-Only into the outside portion and new link portion to put new pin into
-inside out pin direction
-mushrooming the pin end

Park makes a tool (CT-11) to mushroom the end. It runs around $40 - $50, depending on where you buy it. Park says to only use the CT-4 or CT-4.2 to push the pin through. They specifically say not to use the CT-5, CT-6.2, CT-2 or CT-3.

I don't know that I'd use another brand's master link with the Campagnolo chain. I'd just buy the KMC chain and use it instead.

Tom

I've sold many IRD 11s links with no issues or problems. One thing for sure about retail, if somebody is not happy with something, you will hear about it.

Have 'heard' nada.
