Are cases for S & S coupled frames only made by S & S, or are there other manufacturers out there, and possibly doing a better job of it?

yes SandS cases are super pricey. there have been others that come close. Dahon used to offer a near proper sized case. And Ritchey offers a case that is slightly oversized. And recently I googled and found another correct sized case, but it had no wheels. think you gotta bite the bullet and expect the SandS costs a bunch, but is probably the best game in town.

right size, no wheels

Thanks E.

A case , but no wheels? Not so smart IMHO.

Disappointingly Louis Vuitton doesn't yet seem to be making one.

For anyone on a budget, S & S is selling off its stock of black "designer" cases at half price (for a reason, but still worth considering to save moola). Scroll down to the foot of the page.

The new aluminum case looks interesting. Clean lines, durable, and easy to keep clean.

A few months ago, I studied the S&S cases webpage and concluded that I probably would buy one of the black designer cases. Now they are dumping them with the recommendation that they be avoided. I find it hard to pay full price for the case that seemed inferior at first glance.

For what it is worth, I am having couplers installed by Bilenky now, and had a conversation re which case to buy. He said he would stay away from the black one with the butterfly latches.

would he not buy that case?

are the wheels the only problem with the discounted case? and just how unreliable were they?

I have the "original" for my CX and it seems to work pretty well.

...because of the wheels, or the butterfly latches?

He said the hardware breaks sometimes and in the black cases is not replaceable but in the silver is. With price difference of only $30, he definitely advocated the silver. He seemed to have seen enough broken cases to cause concern. Note that the discounted ones are supposedly especially problematic re the wheels -- saw this on another thread somewhere. That said, seems to me if you only use once in awhile, may not matter much.

I note on his site that he seems to be suggesting the riveted hardware is the problem: http://www.bilenky.com/retro_prices.html

are the latches riveted on both the black case and the original gray case?

the newer black case is a couple of pounds lighter and that can be a factor when trying to keep things under 50 pounds.
