I'm looking for an inexpensive steel or Ti frame to play around with and hopefully become better at wrenching on my own bikes. I enjoy the hunting around for components and want to eventually have a nice spare bike to ride instead of just my Fierte.

Does anyone have suggestions for a relatively inexpensive($200-$400) frame to watch the classifieds or EBay for? I'm 6'2 and 230 (usually 58cm - 60cm) so it needs to be sturdy. I also would want a frame that uses fairly easy to find components. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Rob

I'd look for 1980s lugged steel Japanese bikes - Fuji, Centurion, Univega, Miyata.

Otherwise, get a Surly or Soma.

I have bought Litespeeds really cheap, but you have to watch and be willing to snipe them at the last second.

Surly Cross Check, great frame and many options for parts. I am 6'2", 225ish and I love mine.

You can find early-mid 1990s Specialized Allezs complete in that price range. You might want to change out the fork if it's aluminum. Nice frames though.

Another option would be any of the steel LeMonds, especially if you like long top tubes. The Zurich was full 853 most years, the Buenos Aires was 853 with something else in the rear triangle I think, the Alpe D'Huez True Temper, and the Tourmalet True Temper or Reynolds 525 depending on year. These are all tig welded and fairly light steel frames.

Don't forget to pop in your local Goodwill, American Heart/Lung Association, & St. Vincent de Paul stores. The odds are against it, but one hears the occasional tale of a full Campy Record Colnago for 85 bones.

My experience is that "Inexpensive Ti frames" are few and far between. Moreover, they seem to be much coveted here on the forum. On the other hand, it shouldn't take long to find a nice low cost steel frame.

You can't beat a Surly Pacer. Honestly.

it's been stripped and painted by the prior owner, ready to build up...would sell it to you for a song. we're talking LOW PRICE, thinking $250 with shipping inclusive in CONUS at asking price. can work from there, it's a start.

classic '85 Serotta Nova Special X made of Columbus SLX with proper lugged construction. finish is a silvery gray. it could use some new decals.

lemme dig up some fotos and the tech-specs, but it's ~59cm on-center with ~58cm top-tube.
