Very sad for the officer, his family, and possibly the increased use of bikes in police work.

That said, 3 gallons for a 12-mile ride???

Something just doesn't add up here. He would have had to refill his Camelbak at least 3 times, and nobody noticed?

. . . and I also have sympathy for him and his family.

I am wondering from the story, though, where he found a camelback that would hold three GALLONS of fluid. The largest bladder I have seen on any Camelback is 100 oz.--and that's not even a gallon.

Also, three gallons is 384 ounces. comparing it to my Serotta bottles, which I believe are 24 ounces each, that would be SIXTEEN bottles, or 1.33 bottles drunk EVERY mile on a 12 mile ride. I simply don't think I could drink that much fluid even if I wanted to.

Something doesn't add up here--perhaps they meant three LITRES?

I've watched enough re-runs of CSI Las Vegas, CSI Miami, CSI NY and Crossing Jordan to know that something doesn't jive in this investigation...

Fly, I think the article mentioned water he drank right before and right after his ride as well. Maybe he chugged a gallon before and another after he finished. Even at my thirstiest and hottest, I've never drunk that much water, or anything else, at a time, even in my wild college party days.

The largest camelbak reservoir (as found in popular models like the M.U.L.E) holds 3 litres, not 3 gallons.

That's about 3 quarts in old money.

Just call me Mr. Metric.
