View Full Version : OT: Name my new puppy

We lost our dog of 12 years about a month ago and we couldn't stand being without a dog. After a bit of research we made a switch from our normal big dog (Rhodesian Ridgeback) to a Coton de Tulear from Madagascar. We'll take possession in about two weeks and I need some ideas for some names. I rock at boy dog names but can't for the life of me come up with a good, unique female doggie name.

Ideas so far:
Cinelli
Yeti (my kids favorite)
Merckx
Coppi
Bianchi
Cotton
...

Marlene! OR Moots! Or Celeste! Although I think Yeti is a good one! Sorry for your loss and congrats on the new arrival! My soon to be ex took our cat "Socks" when she left and while I was at work. I just can't bring myself to get a replacement pet just yet. Thanks for letting us partake in the new family member and please let us know what the final decision will be!

You typically want a hard first syllable for a dog name...it gets their attention when calling them.....our dog was named "Kelsey". That said, a couple weeks after getting her we went back to the breeder to get her a friend....she was named "Lalique", and we just left it at that.

A friend had a dog she named "Deogie"...pronounced D - O - G. I thought that was kind of funny.....

Greek Mythological Figures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Greek_mythological_figures)

I named my cat "Nyx" (the goddess of night, present at the beginning of creation) because she's all black and before I adopted her, she was living on her own outside raising five kittens.

The problem with cycling names is that they dont match an animal like for example coppi or others.

"Campy" is short enough for him to figure it out is his name really quick.

our dogs are Max and Ludwig. Everyone "gets" Max. Ludwig's name is often butchered it's "LUDVIG" but we hear Ludewigg, Luddwigg, etc. Then sometimes we call him "Loodie" for short but then folks at the groomers call him Luddie, etc. It must confuse the poor guy. I know it confuses me.

I vote for simple names that we stick with consistently. OTOH, I had a fraternity brother whose Springer spaniel was "Dammit". It was a giggle watching our sweet old housemother calling "C'mere Dammit" around the quad.
