The guys on BDC-forum.it have been collecting for years now the addresses of Italian framebuilding artisans (http://www.bdc-forum.it/showthread.php?t=48726). I know the topic has come up a few times before, but I thought it would be useful to have in one place references to all those fabulous workshops. I took a look in my Used Bike Buyers Guide. I don't have the addresses of all of my Italian listings so this list will help me update it, particularly with web addresses, which were not always available when I initially compiled the list. A quick count shows that I have over 60 Italian listings just in the names beginning with A & B! I haven't counted all of them recently, but if I recall, the last time I did it, there were over 300 Italian builders listed in the guide. I do sell an on-line version of it for $3 to anyone who is interested.

I know this list is not complete, so this is also an invitation for people to add to it. From what I remember, BDC had the following criteria:
1. The builder has to be currently producing frames
2. They have to take orders from customers for custom-built projects
3. At least part of their production must be in-house, handbuilt

Here is another good source, with links to additional information. But, most of this information is historical and does not meet the criteria listed above for inclusion.

Cool list!

I just randomly clicked on: http://www.zainabiciclette.it/

Their homepage has a very cool 29er out in the mountains being watched over by an ominous vulture - - awesome.

However, it seems that this bike can be ridden without a chain! At first I saw no controls on the bar and thought it might've been a fixie-29er, but alas, it is missing the chain too.

I would've finished that build before using it is my signature image :)

Does anyone here know which of these are actually Italian-made rather than being some Chinese knock-off? That would be an interesting list.

Hard to tell :) Italians left the old ways of making frames maybe by mid 80's.

In the list u have to add Maza and bilato, both are still in business. Other brands maybe are too but some dont even have a website.

Thank you for including Marnati! His shop is amazing...many of his father's bikes adorn the walls (as well as his own). It's small, but chock full of AWESOME.

I know that one of the factors in compiling the list was that the builder has to produce frames in Italy, even if they outsource some of their work abroad.

I didn't go through the whole list but here are a couple that work better....

http://www.pegoretticicli.com/ instead of http://www.ciclisucarta.it/stuff/pegoretti_it.htm

http://www.pelizzoliworld.com/ instead of http://www.pelizzoligion.it/

And here's one that can be added to the list....

Not sure what it takes to qualify for the list, but here are a few more:

Thanks for the input guys. I've updated links as per CHOKE's suggestions and started a new section at the bottom of the OP for new additions to the list. Keep'em coming!

Both are already on the list. For "Maza," see EMMEZETA, for "bilato," see BILLATO.

I guess the list was intended to exclude those big producers that have streamlined their framebuilding and, thus, no longer qualify as "artigiani." Notice the salient absence of Colnago, Bianchi, Pinarello, etc. I suppose this is the reason why the likes of Moser and Fondriest didn't make the list either. Pavarin and Mino Denti are legitimate additions, since they both seem to be handcrafting individual custom orders in house.

tsarpepe
01-09-2012, 10:17 AM
BTW, Mino Denti deals in horses as well.
http://www.minodenti.it/home_allevamento.htm

If you go with him, the expression "my steed" may not be a case of figurative speech!

Thanks for the links, spaceman.

Right on, it's sad to see brands like Moser abandon traditional frame-building. I have an aluminum Pavarin that was originally built for an Italian pro. It was stripped for new paint, and if you didn't know the material, you would swear that it was fillet-brazed. :)

tsarpepe
01-09-2012, 10:53 AM
Ah yes, the good old days! Fillet brazing was the signature of Moser.

tried scrolling through for alberto masi (milano's)

just came up with this

http://italiancyclingjournal.blogspot.com/2010/12/masi-history.html

any website ?

curious

tsarpepe
01-09-2012, 12:35 PM
Ah, yes, thanks for the reminder. There's no more Masi built in Italy. The name was sold long ago. Alberto Masi now produces framesets with the brand "Milano" at this address:

Masi Alberto
Costruzione E Riparazione Biciclette
V. Arona, 19
20149 Milano
Tel.: (+39) 0233101647
Codice: 00260-00975180

I've added the site to the list:
http://milano3v.com/

Check it out.

Was glad to read on one of the pages:
All Milano frames built by Alberto Masi in Milan, Italy. Made to measure frames are available for road, track, time-trial, and touring in virtually any color scheme. Prices for custom frames/bikes by quotation. Please allow up to three months for delivery.

Viner? http://www.viner.it/

tsarpepe
01-13-2012, 11:11 AM
Viner's out until I get confirmation that they build frames for individual customers. This is the main factor that decides who makes the list: you have to be able to walk into the shop, order a frameset, and have it built there.

JStonebarger
01-13-2012, 11:19 AM
They do. In steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber.

"The product is made by expert craftsmen and the frame can therefore be made to measure according to the needs of the individual cyclist."

And all still in Pistoia Italy (since 1947).

I guess I was thrown off by the very "corporate" look of their website. Will add!
