I have my "good" bikes in the basement hanging on hooks, and in the garage I used a Harbor Freight bike tree (http://www.harborfreight.com/cycle-tree-compact-bike-storage-2628.html) and hang a few on the wall too.

thankfully, my wife likes bikes too, so i proposed a spot in the (small) living room for a wall-mount bike rack. the wood is made of reclaimed pieces from my parents' place in the country (a maple floorboard and oak mantle cut to size), some dark stain with a few coats, and $8 bike hooks coated in grey rubber from the local hardware store. getting it into the studs was a study in perseverance, but with a framing hammer and a screwdriver, it went in. works very well, and looks best when fully loaded. also takes wheels...

I use these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-1-3-Bike-Floor-Parking-Rack-Storage-Stand-Bicycle-/330468524176?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf1758090

I bought three of them over the years and made up two racks of four bikes each. I like that they can be reconfigured as your needs change. Very stable rack.
