I had the rare chance to ride with my good friend, TMB, in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

I am an unrepentant roadie, but I built a pseudo cross bike from a 1983 Schwinn Voyageur base, added some (lord help me) Shimano 10 speed to it, and voila, a trail runner of sorts.

We ran into some mtn bikers on the trails, but it was surprisingly empty. We got a lot of looks, being on 'road' bikes, and more than a few comments.

I didn't bring a camera, but neither of us crashed, though I walked more than TMB.

I was rocking this, which cost me (apart from parts bin 10 speed stuff) a whopping $35 for f/f/hs/bb/cranks & brakes. Just goes to show that you can find a new use for a cheap old frame.

Yep, 10 speed on a 6-7 speed crank, works just fine.

DBC First Chance 200k today. Rode fixed from Davis to Calistoga and back. Beautiful day over in the wine country, crystalline blue skies and low 60's. Perfect!

Happy New Year to all!

ZMUDSHARK: Where in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve did you ride? I have been riding the Dixie Mtn Loop north of Happy Valley Rd once or twice a week...

I rode from my home to Bartlett Lake today (N of Cave Creek, AZ). 68 miles, 4700 feet of climbing, 80 degrees. A great day of riding with some good friends.

30 miles on local single track today. Yesterday I did a 10k trail run followed by some bouldering in the Buttermilks outside of Bishop Ca. My core work really payed off trying to keep up with the younger crowd. A terrific way to start the new year.

Out to Whytecliff Park near Vancouver. It's not a long ride (about 65kms/40mi round), but it's a very beautiful, hilly ride. Good distance/ride for 4 degrees C (40F) plus some moderate wind.

About an hours worth on snow and ice covered dirt roads not too far from home - about 28° or so and cloudy. Not a great day to ride frankly but nice to be out on day one of 2012.

Sickening, isn't it :)
the base of the climb is ~5 minutes from my apartment, and 30 or so minutes to where the photos were taken. In better weather I ride around the mountain at left after doing this part, but right now I do an abbreviated version to avoid too much time on roads that get almost no sun (and are as a result wet and/or icy). There are a lot of variations possible depending on time and motivation, but almost all are doable during the lunch "hour"

Neglected to take pictures. But did a wonderful New Year's Day 100.

Perfect "Chamber of Commerce" Florida weather.

No pics, but I was out and about too. 2:48 on the bike. Rode from my house down to Pearson Ele (Calverton, VA) to meet a teammate. We did 'the loop.' He split for his house that was south, and I surfed the (finally!) tailwind most of the way back north.

All in all two back to back days of 2:46 and 2:48 means I at least got the new year ended and started right!

I had the chance to get two solo rides in on Saturday and Sunday...a great way to end the old year and start the new year. It was a little damp on both rides with some cold rain thrown in for good measure on Sunday, but the roads were virtually empty. Too much ice on the roads this morning to pull a weekend hat trick, so Mrs. RW has me working around the house.

Hope the new year finds you boys and girls in good health, with plenty of riding time to spare.

. . . out west of town in the hills. Not my best fitness performance, but the weather was great for here and New Year's . . . 45 degrees and sunny. I ended up overdressing and got a pretty good sweat going. It's just so nice to be able to go out and ride at all in January!

Up along the New Hampshire- Vermont border on Rt 102, Guildhall VT, with wife (pictured). The White Mountains Presidential Range is in the background. Cold, but beautiful and great to start the year on the bike.

I didn't stop to take any good pictures (well, except at the end of the rides), but my weekend consisted of: climbing Mt Hamilton (again) on New Year's Eve (to beat the mass traffic of resolutioners planning to go up New Year's Day), doing a Century from San Jose to scenic (and quiet) San Francisco on New Year's Day, and probably venturing into Marin/across the Golden Gate Bridge today. The weather (as I've said many times) has been so mild & warm here lately. I feel lucky but also a bit worried (about global warming, it's January?), it's been a great holiday for riding, sightseeing, and competing on Strava events for distance & climbing :). Happy New Year's to all, back to work tomorrow, and I wonder if Winter will ever arrive in California? Until it does, hit the road! ;)

What does a very hot day look like????

Start early and ride within your limits; this going from Adelaide suburbs up to Norton Summit, gateway to the Adelaide Hills for many cyclists on a day when it was 28ºC overnight and near 40ºC by 9am. Maximum temperatures the last three days of 39º Sat, 41º Sun and 41º Mon.

http://www.dbmagazine.com.au/cyclo/NS1.jpg

7.30am, looking due East up the Parade into the sun. 34ºC

http://www.dbmagazine.com.au/cyclo/NS2.jpg

on the lower slopes of Norton Summit looking easterly, about 5% grade, heading to the first switchback.

http://www.dbmagazine.com.au/cyclo/NS3.jpg

half way up, looking west over the city with the gulf in the background. Sweltering already. The road climbed can be seen through the scrub on the ridge spur in the foreground. A constant 5 ~ 6% grade.

http://www.dbmagazine.com.au/cyclo/NS4.jpg

some guys hand, no doubt wondering why he photographed his computer since it does not have a temperature function. Speed 0kmh.

http://www.dbmagazine.com.au/cyclo/NS5.jpg

About 39ºC, about 8.30am. At Norton Summit, looking North from the little park. The main building is the Scenic Hotel, and the main climbing road comes up between the hotel and the church (spire in shot). The Old Norton Summit Road curls down past the pub in the foreground.

Sorry. The only two pictures I took. Seemed a shame to waste 50% of them.

i got out for about 15 miles on trail, streets and bike trail covered in solid ice.
once i reached the outback, the off-road trail seemed pretty tame by comparison...
i rode through a double loop and stopped to snap this shot
just as the sun was setting. i took it easy and just enjoyed being out!
this is the bike i have set up for my wife for winter riding. rather than
swap out the stem for the ride today, i just swapped out pedals
and raised the post. i love this serotta...same bike i climbed haleakala with
serves me pretty well as a winter ice riding machine!

Looks like someone would have had a good time on a 29er with at least 2.10 or greater sized tires. A foot down on that trail? Common now.

No interest in a 29er, or even a 26er. Just like having fun.
