I have a Salsa Casseroll that I just changed from fixed to gears. The mavic skewer I am using isn't working well well with the hardened dropout and is letting the rear wheel slip forward. Any recommendations for a cheap skewer that will hold well?

I have had issue with some of the Mavic skewers as well. I have tried tightening them a little more (as if you think that you are over tightening them) and that has worked.

If not try a Shimano skewer. They have a true cam that tightens twice as much

^that, and maybe try scoring the dropouts with a file,
but I'd try a different skewer first before altering the frame.

campy skewers work really well.

They are not cheap, but the DT rws has been working well on my SS with horizontal dropouts. I use the steel not the Ti version.

I second everything that has been said above. Shimano's cams seem to be strong. I have had a mavic skewer perform poorly for me in the past. I would like to think it's because of all of the watts I'm producing, but my wife tells me it's because I'm a clydesdale. It's amazing how Mavic's quality has gone down in the past years. I see a lot of Mavic issues come through the doors at my shop. It didn't used to be that way. Good Luck!

105, Ultegra or Dura Ace, they will all grip very well, different level of finish but all good. Would imagine the same for Campy internal cam quick release skewer.

any closed cam skewers will work better. any of the ones in the shimano line, or the closed cam campy ones are very good. for inexpensive ones, velo orange has a very nice closed cam skewer set for $18. they're great.

Salsa skewers, though open cam, also have a tenacious grip.

The inexpensive steel skewers that shops sell for trainers are of the old Campy style, and very tight and strong.

I'll second what AngryScientist said.

I'll just join in and say that I had this problem with some Mavic skewers as well - they seem to be designed for vertical drops and slip in horizontal DOs. I swapped skewers with a basic Shimano 105 from another bike and problem solved.

I have read -- and it has been my experience -- that Casseroll dropouts are prone to slippage. A really tight quality skewer solved my problem. Good luck! Those frames definitely fall into the great bang for the buck category.

Thanks for all the advice. I think a cheap set of shimano skewers is what I am after. I've had good luck with Salsa skewers on other bikes but didn't want to spend that much money.

I have a 2011 Casseroll set up geared and use Ultegra skewers and haven't had any issues... and I don't have the skewers gorilla-force closed either...

+1

I like these in steel.

They are not cheap, but the DT rws has been working well on my SS with horizontal dropouts. I use the steel not the Ti version.

Same here. Casseroll with ultegra skewers. Never had an issue.
