So this was the ride today...

http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/photos/charles/state.jpg

Not simply a fraction of the price of any of the other bikes in the house, this is less than half the price of any wheel set here. I have 2 saddles with a higher retail.

Statebicycle.com (http://www.statebicycle.com/default.asp)

Oh, My bad...

It's 429... Not 495...

...Shipped.

I didnt want to come home from the ride. I did. I swapped out to a set of clipless pedals and better shoes and gone again.

I would not recommend to friends who are into serious cycling. Too good to be true is often too good to happen.

"We make them on China because they are world leaders in manufacturing talent, human rights, and fair wages."

Oh wait, wrong thread.

Pez, that looks like a great value, but is it any "greater value" than offerings from BikesDirect?

Also, is the front brake added by you? I don't see them on any of the bikes on the site.

Edit: Nevermind, found it.

[Q] Do State Bicycles come with brakes and pedals?
[A] Yes.All State Bicycles will come with a front brake and pedals with toe cages.Often times the bicycles are photographed without pedals and brakes, which is for artistic and aesthetic purposes only. To order a rear brake please click here.

No, I had fixies living in SF. Had one here for a while and loaned it to a freind who never gave it back. Funny thing is that bike probably had 1000 in parts on it.

It's been a couple years though and that's probably why tearing around on this is so much fun.

The stuff I have here is, for the most part, so over the top that it's a bit of a strange sensation riding round on something so easily getable.

I know a couple of folks who have been pounding these frames for a while. It's just basic kit...

Size range?

Probably the meat of the Bell Curve.

Edit: I see up to a 62. Cool.

they sent a trio of pros to race the Wolfpack Hustle Marathon Crash race last year on fixed gear State frames.. they took 1st place fixed and 2nd and 3rd overall. it took one of the local legends on a 10 large s-works di2 rig to hold them off by a wheel. good stuff. the guys they sponsored were nice dudes. anyway, state opened a shop in the NoHo arts district earlier this year. their bikes, well, let's say they wont win you any points with guys in the fixed gear scene/game.

welcome back to the 99% pez :D

there are a ton of steel fixed gear bikes readily available for that price range and below. generally speaking they are excellent. as long as the chain line is OK and the BB is in tight, there is not much to go wrong with a fixie - that's why people love them and use for winter training.

this beast has a few high dollar parts on it, but its heart is a $150 frame, and it rides brilliantly. perfect for winter training.

I gave my pal a set of Ultegra hubs, Sapim spokes and nipples, and a pair of Velocity Aerohead rims for mine. My headlight is more expensive.

Eric,
What weighs more, the bike or the wrench?

It looks OK, but the stamped steel dropouts on the fork, as well as the frame have braze-ons for a rack make it not very appealing to my eye. The TIG welds look like the work of Doctor Roboto

Ergott, that wrench is heinous, unless you plan to use it for self-defense!

I do need to grab a bigger front ring I think...

And I'll probably run a different brake (and cable housing). Maybe change the stem and go with a differ....

OH Godamnit! :crap:

I'm gonna turn off the fun part of not caring where and how I ride it...

Funny, but the bike looks exactly the same with color as not...

You need one of those Surly 15mm/bottle openers. The Jethro. The flip side of the awesome palm area is a bottle opener.

K, I know the gearing I want to try, Now all I have to do is a bottle cage and a good lock...

What do I do for a lock.

The guy selling these is still making money. $400 plus or minus fixie is pretty easy actually.

Yeah, but for a guy with as F'd up a perception on cost as it I've turned out to have, the whole idea of riding something less than 500 bucks just blows me away...

I think you'd find most people "on the street" would probably put their cost threshold for a bike at well under $500- or whatever you'd pay at a big box store.

Mix it up a bit- Hang out with some non-cyclists for a while! :)

True, it's always entertaining hanging out in my LBS and seeing the reaction of parents and individuals to the cost of upper-end bikes. Certainly the average Joe/Jane can't quite get a grip on why bikes cost so much. I feel their pain. ;)

Go to the back room of any LBS that still has a cotter pin press displayed

on the tool board, you will find enough interesting bits in the back room and
under the counters to assembled a fixed of character and class.

Just installed some cotter pins on a crank last night, old Anquiteil, used this.

In the early 2000s I bought a stock fuji track for ~$350 or so. I rode it a lot, commuted on it, tweaked it, etc. Eventually I started looking for a vintage lugged track frame to replace it, and found this, a '76 fuji feather track bike w/ dura ace and suntour parts, for $350 plus shipping. I sold the newer fuji. I see and appreciate the new basic budget track bikes I see everywhere but I really dig the older lugged bikes, to me they have built in character and class. There are bargains out there, you have to be patient...

OK,

It doubles the cost and spoils the whole vibe...

And I simply dont need it.

But after another day on the road, I would love the precision of a disc front brake...

Here's my take on the cheap single speed. It's a $70 ebay frame with a Cannondale fork and cheap Vuelta wheels. Gearing is a 44 ring with an 18 T freewheel. I tried it fixed for a while, but didn't like it in the short steep rolling hills that I like to ride. I have about $350 in it. Saddle to bar drop is 14 cm, and yes, I ride the drops. Pics from today's ride. I stayed out until it was dark, wishing for more hours of daylight.
