So, the wife's new bike is almost built up. Just the derailleur cables and handlebar (make that Handlebra) wrapping to go. It is lugged steel, deep blue, silver components. She is feeling the old school vibe.

I need to get her some water bottle cages and a saddle bag that are consistent with the theme. Any thoughts? I have some King cages, the swoopy ones. she wasn't feeling it. Wanted something even more minimal. Any silver (polished aluminum) cages that are thin gauge?

For saddle bag, small, narrow is they key. Could do basic black, but are there other choices? The ones like on Rivendell's site are all . . . big.

Thoughts?

Fly, have a look at the Elite Cuisse bottle cages; stainless, hold the bottles very well, 'proper' looking.

someone may cringe here, but i'll put it out there - Rapha saddle pack. old school cool, held on with a leather toe strap. great craftsmanship, and a piece built to last, for sure. lots of other companies will make something similar, Soul Run, for example. I really like the simple look of the Rapha pack though.

cages - King SS standard. the standard IMO.

check the Velo Orange site too, they've got some classic gear.

King SS or Elite Cuisse. For a saddle bag, I really like the Arundel Tubi, Dual if you don't need the extra room.

Nitto cages are very elegant, especially the "R" model. When you say the swoopy King cages, are you referring to the Iris model? That would have been my second recommendation from an aesthetic pov, but I find that it's easier to get bottles in and out of the standard King model.

For bags, the Arundel dual bag is compact, narrow, and very nice. I use the tubi bag for a spare tubular, and it's great. The dual bag is a similar shape but smaller.

+1, had my Elite Cuissi cages for years now.

It's ciussi. I really like them, but the Nitto cages are more attractive.

velo-orange.com. Lots of bits that combine modern technology with vintage appeal. They have some outstanding vintage-looking stainless steel cages (http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/water-bottles-cages.html) .

The VO Retro cage looks like a copy of the Nitto T model, and the VO Moderniste is very similar to the King Iris cage.

I had some of the VO cages and I ended up swapping them out for Nitto. It just felt like having a fake watch or something similar. The Nitto cages are much more nicely made, but then they cost more than twice as much.

I won my favorite old-school accessory in a race a few years ago: a brass bell (ding-ding) with a clock built into the middle of it (not digital, but tick-tock).

Other than that I agree with the others: steel, leather, titanium = barwrap, saddle, saddlebag, bottlecages... maybe some tan-sidewall tires, box rims, a rack, and even generator lights, lol. She definitely needs a brass bell with a clock in it, though!

Depending on how retro you want to go...these are a good value, very lightweight, small diameter gauge and come in stainless and aluminum. And they don't have any name on them. However, no bling factor.

Not sure if they qualify as "old-school", but the Arundel Stainless (http://arundelbike.com/stainless.html) cages are nice looking and work well.

Acorn "tubular" bag:

Seems like they're making them in olive now...hmm...I like them in black, apparently coming back soon.

As already mentioned...Elite Ciussi, King regular, or Nitto cages...also the simple Blackburn as well.

Performance has stainless cages that might fit the bill -- simple, light, relatively inexpensive. I once picked some up at their store in Bailey's Crossroads, by the Trader Joes' (and Full Kee).

Lots of folks like the Elite Cuissi in stainless, but not everybody is a fan of the disc/button/glide things.

Ti less $ than the Nitto steel as wellThe King cages are nice and functional, but don't compare to the Nitto cages aesthetically. The Iribe is in a class by itself.

They are pretty for sure and at $60 they ought to be but I think the Iris is a nice cage and both nicer looking than the Arundel, IMHO...

But it's a bottle cage.

I'd say nitto cages but for the money I'd probably go with VO.

I broke two of the VO Moderniste Cages... they were hollow, and after a 10 months of bumping roads, they simply broke. I was given a refund, and I ended up buying King Iris cages instead.
