In 2009 znfdl had a raffle on the Serotta and Velocipede Salon forums for a custom Spectrum Super titanium frame by Tom Kellogg. The raffle was to raise funds for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America through a team in the Race Across America.
I was the fortunate winner of the frame, and although I have posted a few interim photos I have never given Stuart and Tom their full recognition for this project.
I have a custom Serotta Nove in Texas and Kelly Bedford’s last-built Serotta CSI in Arizona so I decided to design this bike for my time in Washington State, my true home. Work has kept me from getting to the Seattle are much so I have only been to Seattle twice for a total of 5 days in the 15 months since the bike was built-up. I only have one photo of the completed bike and have not even had the time to dial in my position on the bike.
In the fall of 2009 I went to the Barn and had the pleasure of being fit by Tom Kellogg. It was a great experience, and if you are considering a Spectrum don’t hesitate any longer.
The bike is an all-arounder – a road bike designed to handle wider tires and fenders. No fenders or wider tires yet though. The fork is an Alpha Q CS 25. Paint is candy apple green with gold flecks.
I picked up some newer used components and built it up as follows: Campagnolo 11 Chorus/Record, Chorus seat post, Selle Italia Kit Carbonio Flow saddle, Look Keo Carbon pedals and Ritchey stem and handlebars. The wheels are Hed Ardennes and the brakes are Paul Racer Medium. Arundel tape and cages.
I ended up having the frame and the components sent to Veloce Velo on Mercer Island and Greg did a great build job and provided excellent customer service throughout the process. The built-up bike sat for 11 months before I first saw it.
My work has been demanding in Texas, but this last year I have been a one-man business at a business that needs someone on location every day. I am my own boss though! I do expect to have some help in a couple of months.
I wish I could give a better ride report, but I have only ridden about 50 miles. The bike rides perfectly and really feels responsive when climbing out of the saddle. I also enjoyed the Paul’s brakes although I have not had a chance to test them on long descents.
So thanks again to Stuart and Tom for a great bike.
Jeff
