Seeing the "Why can't I let myself let go of a frameset?" thread, I was reminded of a hilarious NYT article that I read a few days ago. According to its logic, you can own 175 bikes and still not be a hoarder, as long as they're neatly arranged, and you have access to them all. You can even write self-help books for people with hoarding problems.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/22/health/the-hoarder-in-you-a-book-that-can-help-cut-through-the-clutter.html?pagewanted=all

Recently, as if by fate, an advance copy of a book arrived in the mail that is without doubt the most helpful tome for anyone with a cluttering tendency. It’s called “The Hoarder in You: How to Live a Happier, Healthier, Uncluttered Life” (published Tuesday by Rodale Books). It was written by Robin Zasio, a clinical psychologist, a star of the show “Hoarders” and director of the Anxiety Treatment Center in Sacramento.

I would say that Dr. Zasio’s book is about the best self-help work I’ve read in my 46 years as a health and science writer. She seems to know all the excuses and impediments to coping effectively with a cluttering problem, and she offers practical, clinically proven antidotes to them...

Dr. Zasio admits to owning 175 pairs of shoes, but, she said, “they’re neatly arranged, and I have access to them all.”

Being poor helps. I sell my bike stuff to buy more.

Interesting that hoarding is associated with anxiety!

As far as I am concerned owning too many things makes me anxious. So I tend to own less, but of a better quality :)

Hoarding is considered a symptom of OCD which is part of Anxiety Disorders in the DSM-IV...

I hoard parts, framesets, forks (because I might, will use them someday...when they will be unavailable, etc.) but then I have anxiety over the fact that I own all this stuff that I don't need or use.

My resolution for 2012 is to get rid of some of the stuff.

All those packages at my doorstep is just an invitation for crime...That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Yes, but if I sell some... but then it probably won't be hoarding.

I'll be like Jesus and take in all of your sins. Sins in this case being hoarded parts/frames/etc.

in my defense, the centaur boxes are empty.

So you hoard empty boxes? At least mine have stuff in them. :p

That may be illegal in some states.

I am a non-hoarder. My wife accuses me of getting rid of too many things that still have value - I don't think they have value.

If i buy something and don't use it I get rid of it.

Good on bikes and parts also. I have three bikes, but they are in three different states.

A friend of ours has an acronym for this--SABLE, for Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy. She's a cyclist, but in her case this refers to yarn!

That's me. Although of late I have purged most really excess parts and frames. Now I only have frames that store the spare parts for my primary bike(s), and some spares in case those break because I might want to ride that bike and it would suck if it wasn't complete because I used a part off it to fix my primary bike(s). And some shiny stuff that's too pretty to sell.
