Hello,

I am trying to get some Dura Ace 7402 downtube shifters on a quill stem to work. Mounting them is not an issue but shifting is. I need to find some type of quill stem cable stops, if they exist. Any tips or other ideas?

Also, I know you can get the old friction shifters that mount to a quill stem, but I want indexing.

Thanks for the help,

Why not just use Paul's Thumbies for road bars or Kelly Take-Offs? Stem shifters suck - top mounts can be put really close to the stem and are easier to use.

7400 shifters will work fine - they have the same mounting post as the bar ends Paul designed around.

Otherwise, there were plenty of 6 speed indexed stem shifters made by Shimano and Suntour. Find one of those rather than spending a mint trying to do something terrible with a DA shifter.

Yeah I was thinking of the VO thumbies for my VO handlebar but they are $50.00 and I still want to mount them on the stem.

I might have to make my own with the welder if I want indexing 8 speed.

Are some of the older (I'm thinking maybe Suntour or Campagnolo Nuovo Record from the '70s) clamp-on downtube shifter brackets made where you could remove the levers and mount your DA levers? (I have several bikes with these & maybe a set laying around I can check...but then again, if you can do that, maybe you can do the same thing with a Shimano or Suntour stem shifter bracket and it would be even easier). Interesting question - I'd like to hear what you end up coming up with.
