View Full Version : How would you build an MXL?

Since there are a fair number of informed cyclists with strong opinions on how classic bikes should be built, how about sharing them with me?

I have an MXL that I bought from protege55, which is currently still in the planning stages as far as how I'm going to build it up. I've seen different perspectives on here on which group to use: some like DA, others Chorus 11, Record 11, or SR 11. The frame has 130 rear spacing, so I can use whatever wheelset makes sense - a modern Campy, DA, Chris King, or DA wheelset, or have ergott build something for me. It has a 1" threadless steerer, so it will use current stems and bars.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Let the fun begin.

I'd go with Record or Chorus 10 spd with some 32 spoke wheels.

I would build it with a NOS 7403 group with dt controls. Plus Nemesis and Regal.

Interesting. I could take that DA group off my Weigle.

More than interesting. The machine won't be your limiter. Go for it.

Alloy Chorus or Record 10 would be my vote.

But I'm a little biased...

Congratulations on getting a great bike!

Unless it is an actual team bike that was built with a specific groupset back in the day (think 7400 DA on a Motorola bike or Record 8 on a Telekom machine) build it with whatever floats your boat.

Cheers,

Texbike

Just like this. IMO the hottest Merckx on the planet.

Nice! I'd Regalize it and get those bar straights level.

Vintage? Find a Telecom type group, C-Record, even Deltas, friction shifters, tubulars.

Current that would look great? Athena aluminum, Miche or Velocity silver hubs(or Campgnolo silver if you can find them), laced to DT 415/465(silver), silver spokes.

Campy, unless it is a Motorola or 7-11.

Pretty sound advice in my book.

Something like this;

Somehow the Old Spud and I agree on a lot of stuff!

I too have a 54cm green MXL. I'll try and snap some pics, but I built it up about a year ago and had a similar dilemma as to what to hang on the frame. I wanted to go 10 speed Campy, but that was just my personal preference. I had some carbon centaur levers with a centaur carbon rear derailleur, and an alloy record crank and alloy fd. For wheels I went with 32 spoke black record hubs laced to black open pro rims. I think the carbon and black components balance pretty well with the alloy. If you don't want to piece together a group, I would recommend finding a 2010 Athena group and just being done with it.

I agree with FlashUNC...I am a fan of a modern-ish group on a classic frame. I think the lines of a Chorus/Record 10spd group with some nice 32h hoops would look fantastic. I'd even opt for an alloy version of the crankset with the square taper BB...

I also vote for the alloy square taper crankset. Had a Chorus 10 speed alloy on my MXL, looked great. Now I just have the crankset in a box....

Mine's Record 10 alloy. My other one is Centaur/Chorus 10 alloy.

I agree with modernish campy alloy. How about adding Athena 11 Alloy to the mix?

it would be completely carbon..wheels, fork, and components. I like contrast

It's number 45 of the 100 replica Motorola team frames built around 2005. While it has the team colors, it's got the threadless steerer and 130 rear spacing. So, does that mean I should lean towards the period correct build for the Motorola team bike (DA 7400), or the period correct build for the year it was constructed (more or less current groups)?

If you want to see how it would look with Campy 10:
