A feature article in the Wall St Journal in which a couple with 22 bikes built a house for themselves and the bikes, incl a hot water wash!! Now that's taking it to a new level!

Bicyclists' House built for Two (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204262304577068260202452078.html?m od=WSJ_hpp_MIDDLE_Video_Third)

"Officially it's called an 'accessory dwelling unit,' but actually the house is really the accessory," joked Mr. Butler.

Very nice. Interesting that the city permitted that - I thought most places won't allow a house to be so much taller than all of the surrounding homes.

Must be a sign of the inevitable - cycling has jumped the shark.

I need to move on to the next niche thing. Maybe competitive distance walking on your hands.

That's pretty fantastic.

Pretty committed or ballsy to outspend the neighborhood valuation by 3x...of course around here $1.5 gets you a teardown.

As for dedicated rooms, classmate of my daughter has a racquetball court underneath his house.....it happens. would love to have dedicated sports equipment room.

I once thought about buying an old firehose to make storing hobiecats easier. :)

When the kids move out, their rooms become the dedicated equipment rooms!

It's cool. But in the SE Portland area it will stick out like a sore thumb.....kind of like a beacon saying:"There's a horde of expensive bikes and parts right here!!!"

Portland limited its city's footprint, so they'll permit denser construction. Since it's flat roofed, that was probably a factor, too The limit in my neighborhood is 34', but no third story allowed.

i see the guy out on his bikes when i get home from work. i've got commuter gear on, he's kitted out (in west end bikes garb :-/). Must be tough to be an asset manager. really, what does one need to be part of the 1%? an MBA? f that. again, this guy lives like 3 blocks away from me. im only allowed 3 bikes per wife.
edit: recently the wife said something like "as long as it doesn't do what another bike does" which opens possibilities...

Only 22 bikes?

actually, I thought the same especially given they are both avid racers.

lets say each has 2 mtn bikes and a portland cruiser. say they also both race cross, so have race and pit bike. that would be 10 right there.

that leaves only 6 road bikes, one of which is likely a TT...so five left. take away the old one with memories that cant be parted with, then then you have 4 road each. hell I have 4 road and I dont race.

Excellent.

The people who say it can't be done should not get in the way of the people who are doing it.

. . . if local zoning laws will allow. But I do wonder what the neighbors think of it--off the record.

It also all looks very cold to me. I know people usually clean up their houses for these stories, but this one just looks to me like a house, but not like a real "home."

"When they moved in, the Butlers had an open house "so that the neighbors wouldn't be so angry there was such a big house on their street,"

Classic.

. . . that at this point it would be a little late. The time to get the neighbor's buy-in would have been before they ever started construction.

I don't care what my neighbor's house looks like if my neighbors are nice.

allowed?

It's an elliptical expression. He means that, under the helpful suggested guidelines thoughtfully provided by the wife, which he wisely chooses to follow, he is allowed 3. Until he comes up with a really good story about number 4. Which, until then, he can park next to my old Kawasaki KZ1000, wherever it may have gone since 1997.

This is the life we have chosen.

Has over 50 bikes in his house. He has them hanging in closets so the dude in the article is a LIGHT WEIGHT compared to our own Spoke.

BTW Spoke will be building his own frames pretty soon so I expect that number to GROW.
