They build and paint an evil bike and I mean that in the best way. Every time I see one I have to clutch my chest, get out of my seat and place my wallet in a safe place far far from my computer and phone for a few days...then life goes back to normal...until another Baum thread hits the forum dangit.

Probably I will commit some sacrilege, but baum welding is waaaaaayyy better than an pegoretti's. Bicycle wise Baum is more racy than pegoretti. Like it a lot.

If you're in the Bay Area they have a few at Above Category. Leave your wallet at home though...

Granted it has Lightweights, but I think the Di2 Coretto there is something silly like 14lbs.

Gorgeous paint...on par with the likes of TK or Mr. Bell.

The ti Baum at AC was easily the most impressive road race frame I have ever seen. $8400, I believe, for frame, fork, headset, stem and seat post.

Yes it's sweet but I think I'd take two Peg respo's for one Baum anyday. I was interested in a Baum until I saw the sticker shock. i ended up with my hampsten and I'm really glad i went that route. I'd also take 2 gran Paradiso's titanium frames for a single Baum frame anyday of the week.

The asking price for the Baum frame package is pretty elite.

But this price is for the output of 1 craftsman so relative to some mass market offerings, it dos not strike me as rapacious. A Trek RS Team replica is $9.5K. I would take the product of a builder over industrial output anyday. Still pricy though.

Does Baum or shouldn't Baum offer something in steel? Yeah Ti is all exotic tech and all but steel is a slightly less expensive material. That should pull a steel Baum out of halo-range and more in line with other top makers.

Both bikes are...amazing, the build quality is astounding.
If you are ever in the bay area I strongly suggest you stop by Above Category in Mill Valley and hang out, I don't think ive ever met a nicer bike shop staff.

It can be the price for 10 craftsmen but its still hideously high. And a good production bike lacks little in the way of precision execution.

I'm not so sure the 6.9SSL Trek is a typical production bike actually. I would take it in a heart beat over a fancy painted everyday Ti bike like the Baum. If I wanted state of the art Ti, I would go for Moots, Hampsten or Serotta. But that's not going to happen because I'm a carbon man now, and for the long haul.

Australian dollars are about even with the US dollar, which is why these things are so expensive for us. The Oz dollar used to be 2 to 1, which would bring the price somewhat to more reasonable levels. Blame China for hoarding all of Australia's (and BHP Billiton's) base metal production...

Agreed which is why I'll spend my dollars on a frame made in the US that is equal to or better that the Baum and I mean no disrespect to Baum who I believe makes a first class product. I'll also throw Firefly in the equation based on their frame prices. Really though it's all good all around.

The price of the Baum frameset also includes either a King or Tune headset, a painted stem (3T or slight upcharge for Deda) and a painted Enve post. I'm also sure a couple hundred bucks get funnelled into shipping. The price listed on the AC site is out-the-door, plus tax of course. They're still expensive, but all that stuff probably adds up to the better part of a grand. In the end doesn't that put it on par with Serotta's most spendy options?

The Baums are the only ti frames I've seen in the past few years that have really taken my breath away but I agree. I look at Firefly and personally see a company that is going to have the ability to raise prices. Their stuff is red hot, the wait is pretty short...though 5 months for a company that "just" opened in a bad economy...? Get it while the gettin's good...

I wanted a Baum so I asked around for some prices. Around 4k (US) for steel, 5k for stainless. I also know Blacksmith Cycles in Toronto has them.

They also do 2 tig welded steel models.

I have a 4 year old Espresso and are very happy with it.

Ti just gives you more bling and a lighter wallet.

@ EvanOT: Bravo. I dig on steel so the Ristretto is on my radar.

Not my intent to comment on for or against high-priced cycling wares. That's what the Rapha threads are for (JK ;) ). But just as a a RS-replica Trek is not much found across the bike enthusiast population, same holds true for Baums. But either bike has been sold and exist in some proud owners garage. A decision process was gone through to get that bike home so it is worth the price for whomever bought which bike. Hands vs. epoxy pre-preg mold.

If a steel Baum is $4K then that's not an unreasonable asking price for a respected builder's output. So the Coretto as $8K halo-bike, well carry on.
