The ones I find myself using the most are the basics...exchange rate, metric conversion, dictionary. The one I find most helpful, and this might sound odd, is an app with cat sounds. We have a cat who constantly gets out on us and when I use the cat sounds ap, he can;t resist coming over to check it out. It saves on the chasing down time exponentially.

I sort of follow the approach of when i want to do something, I check if I can (there's almost always an ap for that!). I LOVE mapmyride...that's a killer freebie. I use the mapquest turn by turn navigation a LOT. I like a few games, but I'm generally not a game guy. The office aps are a must have for me and I also love the usb disc ap which makes it more document/harddrive friendly.

check out AppShopper or Apbzr. they are good programs to search for other Apps and will alert you to price drops and updates if you save interesting Apps to your wish list. The iTunes search feature sux and these two engines are much more fruitful. By example if you type in "Hangman" they will pull up anything with hangman in it or even related to hangman. The iTunes search only uses EXACT letters kind sux because it is so limited when searching for other apps that you want or might need

Doesn't anyone use cycling related aps like GPS etc?
I have heard that it sucks battery life fast with some programs, is that why people shy away?

I'm still using my old flip phone. Works great when I get flipped the bird.
I simply throw it at the offenders head, walk over, pick it up and ride on.
Cost to me "Priceless".

I have used "Cardio Trainer" for cycling and running applications, but the OP asked far favorites. I have and use a bunch more apps, but listed the ones I like best. Cardio Trainer works fine, probably kills the battery in about 4 hours, and is kind of fun. I do like it better for running though...can listen to music on Pandora while it operates in the background with pace and distance information.

One other favorite is Dictionary.com's free application. Great for its daily word and for scrabble lookups.

Cyclemeter is fantastic.

Accuweather to replace Apple's awful weather app.
Netflix
Fandango for movie times and tickets
Jens Sounds app because its always good for a cheap laugh.
Rapha Rendevous app for coordinating rides with friends.
Urbanspoon and Yelp for restaurant recommendations.

Those are the big ones really.

Oh, and Angry Birds. LOTS of Angry Birds.

You can throw Nokia smart phones too. I've dropped, tossed my phones (E and N series) so many times, to the point of cracking shells but they work perfectly. A guy in the office dropped his N8 in a lake, and besides the camera losing its ability to focus (mech probably rusted) it still works. I hated developing on the Nokia software but I'll give the hardware the benefit that they're extremely durable.

For iphone, the only iapp I was ever hooked on was Scramble by Zynga software. On Nokias, the Opera browser was a considerable improvement over the native one, and I believe it is now available for iPhone, it might be worth a try.

Around me....indispensable for travel, and good local too.
Yellowpages....the actual book may be on the way out, but the app is useful.
Accuweather.....gives me the wind which is how I plan my rides.
Sports tracker....I don't strava, but I use sports tracker to monitor my rides. They make my cardio strap, and their app is good.
eBay....use it all the time...too much of the time, maybe.
Facebook......although I don't actually fb, my dog has An Acct, which lets me
view vicariously through his eyes, which is far more entertaining.
Twitter.....I hate it but use it from time to time.
Tumblr....lots of nice bike stuff on there
Shazam....great for identifying a song you hear but don't know what it is.
Flixster....easy showtimes and previews for movies.
Photobucket....all my bike pics

Then I have about ten pages of candy and cupcake making apps and games from when my daughter linked her phone to mine:eek:

On Android:

Wrgb weather ... simple and beats the other weather apps I tried;
WAZE ... navigation tool that kicks butt. It not only knows routes but traffic, construction etc and will re-route you very efficiently.
RWGPS ... I use a Garmin most of the time but the app is pretty cool. I know this on is available for IOS too. They've done a lot of work to make it work well with existing cell phone battery life.

Since no one has mentioned them so far:

Google
Google Maps

The Google search app has intelligent voice recognition that leaves Siri in the dust. (Siri is the Alta Vista of voice recognition.) Try something like "What hotel in San Francisco was featured in the movie High Anxiety?" with both Siri and Google's app and you'll see what I mean.

After years of hearing navigation systems will guide you away from heavy traffic, Google Maps really does it. The Waze app does it too, but Waze will run your battery down 24/7 as it collects your phone's location. Google bought Waze, so Google Maps benefits from the real time traffic data, but doesn't run your battery down when it's not in use.

If you live in the Bay Area and use BART, like I do, the BART mobile app is indispensable. I live by the "Real-Time Departures" tab.

Re. rwgps
"What is it that you like about this app? I have Strava and MayMyRide, and am currently using Strava mainly for the social aspect as this is what all my riding pals use. "

As I mentioned, I don't use the rwgps app all that much. But since I use rwgps for creating maps and cue sheets all the time I have the app and follow its progress. If you use the online Strava site all the time then I'd go with their app. I personally am not all that interested in the social aspects of it. I have probably a hundred + rwgps segments (Strava kom's) defined in my local riding area. Some of them I have over a hundred efforts at over the last 5 years. They give me a pretty honest and detailed assessment of my fitness (and weight). For our local bike club the maps and cues are invaluable to stop reinventing the wheel every year.

The rwgps app does allow you to download the routes in advance, which should be valuable to those who are concerned about battery life. It has newly added the ability to see routes in a special club area on rwgps. We have 80+ maps in that area with more coming soon. They will be adding the ability to see club events through the app soon. Now I just need to figure a way to get our web site ride calendar into rwgps events automatically ...

Some folks I ride with do use the rwgps app to navigate. Personally I'd rather tape a printed cue sheet to my handlebars when I need it but to each their own. When my Garmin 800 dies I will probably experiment with using the smartphone and app on a daily basis for recording rides.
