I can't give you a first hand recommendation, but you might ask Ari at Bespoke Cycles - he might be able to refer you to someone.

Ride to top of Mt. Tam. Ride down as fast as you possibly can. Ride to top of Grizzly Peak. Ride down as fast as you possibly can. Do this often. In all sincerity, this is how some of us did it.

But you probably crashed a few times....I know I did. It's not bad advice but he's probably old enough not to want to explore his limits that way...otherwise he wouldn't even ask.

Join a club and find someone that you know is smoother, safer and faster than you and follow their line, mimic their position and feet while doing so.

Sometimes clubs have skills clinics that can be helpful.

In the south bay, Matt McNamara does some personal coaching.

Lorri Lee Lown runs a number of clinics on the Peninsula. Some are exclusive to female riders, while others are not. Her Death Ride prep clinics and camps are quite popular:

I (not a female) took the 101 and 201 clinics. I think they are good starting points. Like others have suggested, tagging along with seasoned riders who can pay 1-on-1 attention would be great for added depth.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got in contact with Wholeathlete up in Marin and will be working with one of their coaches for some one on one sessions.

Will let you guys know things work out.

Thanks to Ti Designs for his thread - gave me the last bit of inspiration I needed to try this.

After 15 years of cycling with some decent mileage and memorable rides, I just felt it was time to start working on some of my deficiencies to be a "good" rider. :)
