I am looking for a Fork for 2008 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR frame I want to build up. I would like a decent performing fork.Im new to MTBing any reccomend a couple to look at and some place reasonable in price.

Should I go with a QR or thru axle set up?

Most folks will say Fox forks (except Jack who will say a Lefty, which is a great thing if you can afford it, but for non Cannondales they get expensive fast). I am a fan of the White Brothers, I ran a Magic 80 on my Moots for years, and I'll get a new White Brothers Loop 100 for the incoming Zanc 29er when it comes in early next year. A bit pricy, but not too bad, you can use VIP15 at Universal Cyclist for 15% off any purchase over $300 to bring it down into a pretty competitive pricing range.

They only offer it with the 15QR through axel, so I got an adapter for my Chris King ISO front hub. I don't have it put together yet, but folks really like how stiff the through axels are.

Here is a bit of info.

The LBS shop owner/Mech,a road ,TT and Mountain biker mentioned WB ,Fox and Rockshox and maybe Manitou. Said he didn't like the Lefty and always seen them let people down. I asked about X-Fusion also.

My bike has that Brain and I was thinking of the White Bros with IMV. He did mention that White Bros would be some $$ but he liked them. He usually is pretty reasonable price wise.

if you're running 100mm or less, you probably can get away with QR. i'd go TA with 120 or more, either 15 or 20.

I'd go with a fox 29er 100mm terralogic 15mm through adapter. It's not quite at a lefty level but it's damn close and would be what I'd use on a non lefty 29er.

1. Fox
2. RockShox
A very distant 3. Everyone else

Do yourself a favor and find a thru-axle fork, especially with 29. If you don't you will have a hard time playing with what is essentially the new "standard".

Being Poor and having had multiple forks from Manitou, RockShox, and Fox I would have to say my favorite is the Rock Shox. Its easy to rebuild, smoother than fox IMHO, adjustable, and best of all doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I use my mountain bike hard and don't see a need for all the expensive platform stuff. Last fork I bought was a 2011 Rock Shox Reba RLT. I had a fox terralogic, and RLT Ti in front of me and couldn't justify the extra money when the RLT worked almost the same and was 300-450 cheaper. I could almost buy two RLT forks for the cost of a terralogic. Its your money spend it how you want, but I doubt you can go wrong with either rock shox or Fox. Manitou while better than they used to be still scares me enough to not buy a newbie from them.

Rockshok Rebas are the best bang for your buck. Fox forks are excellent but pricey. Nothing against the others but it's best to go with a model which can be easily maintained and repaired by most any shop if problems crop up. Go for a thru axle hub too,

the RockShox Recon forks are nice, they are similar to the Reba but a little cheaper.

I found a Marzzochi 44 Micro Ti for $289.00 120mm TA ,would this be in the ball park of the above? Didn't think there would be so many choices with a MTB!

Great price! What year is the fork? Reviews seem pretty good, and they have a 3 year warrantee, so likely not a bad gamble. Some reviewers say they are a bit flexy, but that seemed more the case with the 2009 and 2010 versions. I had a B2 Bomber about 10 years ago and loved that fork, but Marzzochi has had a hard time in recent years.

It is a 2010 brought up to 2011 standards. Straight steerer qr15.

You sure about the straight steerer? I'll admit, I'm a bit tempted by this deal, but by my reading of the Huck and Roll deal, these are marked "Steer Tube Diameter: 1.125 in 1.5" which is tapered. I'd confirm with them before you make any final decisions, and let me know, at that price, I may try one out on the Zanc.

Look at the travel of the Marzocchi and make sure its not going to be too much for your frame...

Its a 100-140mm that is delivered at 120. You install a spacer (hopefully included) to reduce to 100 (or remove a spacer to increase to 140). I figure for ~$250 it is worth a try (there are some coupons available for H&R). These forks get surprisingly good reviews and Marzocchi USA's customer support is supposed to be great. The truth is I have a soft spot as a happy user of a B2 Bomber for many years from 2001. I think I'm going to actually try one of these out. Thanks Jack!

Marzocchi produced some great forks and hopefully is back in the running.
I'm still riding a Z2 Atom Bomb on my loaner/town bike. Changed the oil a few times and it's still going strong.

Zach,I have to thank you right back with that Coupon Code! I have one on the way too. For half the price I was quoted from my shop for lesser models I am getting a much better fork. The reviews I read really swayed me. Hope this will be a good match for my '08 Stumpjumper FSR.. The savings will allow me some good wheels tires and Grouppo..
