Are PEDs illegal?

Do people go to jail for taking PEDs or just for lying about it? Does it vary by country?

Sporting fraud isn't illegal in the US but is in many countrys in Europe. Other things involved in PEDs in the US are illegal, like false perscriptions, trafficing in any perscription drugs, money laundering, etc...But taking EPO, for instance, in the US isn't illegal per se.

Rx

if you have a valid prescription for the drugs, it isn't illegal (and by valid, meaning for an actualy medical issue)... if you're taking EPO for instance without a prescription or if there is no medical issue that requires EPO, then by my understanding its illegal...

thats the issue with athletes using drugs... its illegal to take steroids/PEDs and the like without a valid prescription...

Enforcement has been lax for a very long time, as it was seen as a victimless crime because the roided-up gym rats rarely ended up homeless on the streets and robbing convenience stores. That is changing, as there is now a perception that more and more high school athletes are turning to PED's to emulate the Pros. That was the line of reasoning often used to justify the Bonds/BALCO investigation and prosecution.

There are plenty of OTC meds which are classified as PEDs.
Sudafed, for one.
Not to mention all those supplements that certain politicos won't allow to be regulated.

One question that I've wondered about with Lance is the extent to which his taking PED's, steroids in particular, might have brought on his cancer. Does taking testosterone and steroids increase the likelihood of testicular cancer? If yes, it's a good reason for banning their use.

Just for the sake of conjucture, if Lance took PEDs that caused his cancer why would he continue to use them? Frankie Andreau said in an interview that Lance confided in him while in treatment about using PEDs and his fear that it caused his cancer. Of course you could make the assumption as did the French press at the time that chemotherapy treatment is an unfair advantage.

Local sheriff deputies working out at neighborhood gyms rumored to use steroids. If true one has to wonder ethics, legal questions there.
