Do deer whistles work?

2-3 mornings a week, my buddy and I ride up Kings Mountain Rd, a classic climb near us. On the way up, we often pass 2-3 deer grazing by the side of the road. We can hit 40 mph on the descent, and this morning, we passed 3 deer on the way down. A neighbor hit a deer on this road a few years ago and has never biked again.

Which got me thinking about installing deer whistles on our bikes. Do they work?

wouldn't you only know if they didn't?? state troopers around here have them all mounted to the bumpers of their interstate troopers and they swear by them.

That's what I do. many moons ago, after bombing down Decker (South of Corvallis, OR) and having a buck bound across the road about thirty feet in front of me and just missing him, I decided I better make some noise from now on in deer prone areas. Barking like a dog seems to work....and people think you're crazy so they leave you alone.

i don't think it works if you just wear the shirt/jersey, you still have to bark.

The shirt/jersey might work for deer, but they allow grazing on public land out here. I don't want to look like a matador waving a red cape while riding past bulls on the sides of the road.

I think that it was Steven Wright who joked that he "...accidentally installed deer whistles on my rear bumper. Now everywhere I go, I am chased by herds of deer."

Up Old La Honda, down La Honda (84) always seems safer and more fun to me. And the much greater traffic on La Honda scares away the deer I think -- I can't think of the last time I saw one there.

That said, in my experince, deer whistles don't do anything but make noise -- I mounted a set on my car years ago deer could care less. Then I hit a deer with said car and that was the last of my experiment.
