Riding in Como, Italy?

Going to Como and thinking about renting a bike while there for 1 day. Anyone ever ride SP583 from Como to Bellagio? Looks like a fairly narrow 2 lane road through small villages. Wonder how safe it is.

i did bellagio to nesso in may, it's a little tight, but light enough traffic. here's what it looks like:

be very careful through the towns because the corners of the buildings just jut out into the street and completely blind all road users more often than youd think was possible..

We were there a month ago. I'd pass on the cycling. The roads around Como are extremely narrow. It was difficult enough in a car. If you do ride it would have to be early in the am. The rest of Italy however is fantastic....

Yeah - leaning that way. May just do some running instead.

You only live once. I refuse to believe there is not a single good road for cycling in such a beautiful area. Go for it!

Yes, I did it about 6yrs ago

I went from Como out to the Madona Ghisallo in Magreglio down to Bellagio and back on the SP583 the riding was beautiful but there are some tunnels that you pass through on the SP583 that you have to go around as a bicyclist, they aren't extremely long but can be sketchy. I would do it again.

I did a bunch of riding around Lecco/Bellagio/Ghisallo in July and would highly recommend it. The roads are very narrow in places, but there is a ton of bike traffic and the motorists are completely expecting you and used to it. Mornings and evenings were great, and relatively car free.

I'd bring a good flashing tail light for the tunnels just in case you end up in one - sounds worse than it is. We used Rush Cycles in Lecco for rentals (Pinarello and Cannondale), but that's some distance from Como proper.

Saw your post - good stuff! I did reach out to comolagobike but they aren't that close since I will be staying in Como. Was looking at finding a similar group ride service in Como. Or just rent a bike and ride around Como and maybe part way up to Bellagio. Was hoping to do the Ghisallo but i don't think timimg will work based on being in Como.

The Moto Guzzi factory is right there. That would be my first stop for sure!

Just left Como and wanted to let everybody know what I saw. I didn't go ride but saw tons of riders out on the roads. Many were older men on high end road bikes without helmets but also quite a few folks just commuting on old jalopies. Roads were primarily 2 lane without any shoulders but drivers were respectful and patient as it seems Italians are used to driving with riders. I would be a bit nervous riding on the roads but seems like natives are pretty used to all of the cars flying around them. I was content running around the lake on the saftey of sidewalks....

It's a shame that isn't the case for most of us here.

Seems like it's not as simple as just more cyclists around.

Don't know where to ride in Como because when I went about 12 years ago I was not into bikes so much but Como/Lake Como is probably one of my favorite places in Europe (definitely favorite in Italy), what a beautiful place.
