Nooooooo!! Hole in a sock = that pair is thrown away.
Socks are too cheap to mess with and they *never* feel the same if repaired. Gary Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't, but will say that I purchased 3 pairs of wool Rapha socks 6 months ago - also purchased 3 pairs of smartwool socks at the same time (casual wear for both) and the Rapha's are junk compared to the Smartwool. Holes in random places and worn thin on the soles.

Holey sock = shoe cover
I end up using them as shoe covers for the cooler months…if aesthetics are troubling, they also make good “mid layers” - over the shoes/under heavier booties - for the very cold months.

Moved to General Discussion.
Thank goodness too, I was about to ban you for trying to sell used socks with holes in them. Here seems like a great place to sing the praises of Darn Tough socks. Lifetime guarantee. They would send you a new pair if that happened.

I mostly use darn tough socks, and until the heels wear through, which takes forever on their winter mountaineering socks, but doesn’t take too long with their thin, casual tall socks I use for when I wear shoes and cycling. Never sent a pair back for warranty. Last edited by Likes2ridefar; 05-02-2024 at 09:08 AM. |

I have only had one pair of socks that I got holes. The key is to deal with it early - as soon as you see an issue, and before it becomes a bigger hole. A few threads to close up or reinforce the area aren't noticeable.

you can use a sock darner to mend the hole. I even found a link on Bob Vila's site where he shows how to use an egg as a darner.
( I learned what a sock darner was and how it's used after visiting/touring a land conservation place in Selah, TX. Mr. Bamberger had a shed where he had memorabilia from his childhood and one of things on display was 2 weird maraca looking things that ended up being sock darners) Quote:

I've never had a hole show up in a pair of cycling socks. I don't think I've even had holes in running socks over the years and they see a lot more abuse. The stretch does wear out eventually, but no holes.

I have repaired toe holes in my Defeet Woolie Boolies. Doubled the life of the sock, and they are not cheap. It was pretty easy, and I felt good about it.
The problem now is that I think I will get around to repairing all my socks, so I have a small bag of them. I think I'll store them next to my tubes awaiting patching. I must have toxic toes or something... |

I usually only get holes when the whole sock is wearing thin and ready to the trash. Or abrasion on the ankle.
If I have multiple pairs the same, I'll keep the good one so I can make a pair later if needed. But usually, they just go into a bin by my toolbox for use as cleaning rags (along with old t-shirts). |

I've worn nothing but Swiftwick for 16 yrs. Never had a hole. Best socks you've ever worn, or they'll give you your money back.

I use darn tough across the board. Bike, ski, casual
When they finally blow out after a decade or so, I move on. I'm 54...3 or 4 sets of socks left, so I will happily buy more. Means I'm gonna live and what not Don't be so cheap as to bother them with a warranty. Nobody around here is living in a yurt by the river For the record...smartwool doesn't hold a candle to darn tough |

To the OP, I’ve never had to sew up socks and would not hesitate to return them if they developed holes. From the looks of it, considering that you have a wicked middle toe stressor I’m not surprised they gave way. |
