14-28 cassette

Was looking at ultegra cassettes and saw the 14-28 range as an option. I love this idea as my 11 and 12 are seldom used and i would prefer smaller gaps elsewhere in the set. I did find myself in the 13 occasionally when i used a 13-29 campy, but i dont think id really miss the 13 either

Was just interested and happy to see that. Will be trying it for sure in the near future.

I've been using a 14-25 9-speed cassette on my light touring bike for a long time (52/42/30 triple in the front). I really like the narrow gaps between cogs, and the occasions when I wish for a 52/13 are extremely rare.

Besides, junior gearing makes me feel younger.

I use a ten speed 14-26 (14-15-16-17-18-19-20-21-23-26) Campy 10 a lot with a 39-52 front on flat riding near my house. (use something else for hills or traveling). Use the 23 and 26 from a worn out loose cog ten speed 13-26 and the rest from a junior 14-23 ten speed Veloce cassette.

So run what you like. I have a top speed with a tail wind of about 30 MPH with a 52X14. Never need more for flats riding. Maybe some of you do. BTW....when I started riding....my first real bike....a 1973 P 13 Schwinn Paramount came with a top gear of 52X14. No racer used more in those days.

I've been using that configuration with a compact 50 X 34 crankset. I spinout if I get a big tailwind or descent at around 29 or 30mph, but I don't care. I never used an 11 tooth - rarely a 12, and while I could use a 13 sometimes, I don't mind giving it up to get the minimal jumps where I really spend my time. I make no pretense of being a fast rider. I like to look around on descents and if I get a big tailwind, happy days . . .

The shifts sequence is pretty straightforward. Only awkward in the middle of the gear range where a multiple position double shift is required.

I like this cassette with a compact for the hills around here. Don't really miss the 11,12 or 13 at all. Can definitely spin out, but I'm not racing on it and enjoy the ratios it provides.

39/52 w/ 13/29 may be my ideal setup...

I've been changing chain rings in order to get a gear inch number close to what I had with 52/13. There are a few cassette options with a 13 but the vast majority these days run either the 12 or 11 so swapping chain rings for me at least was just an easier way to go.

Yes....44X11, 48X12 is same top gear as 52X13. 4-1. 49X13 about same top gear as 52x14. I like running a 39X49 on front.

I just received mine last week. It'll be interesting. I don't think I will miss the12 or 13 at all.

The only issue is perhaps 14 with clearance for seat stay/chainstay junction.
