Slippery slope, man. You need to try someone's low trail bike. It'll take you about 10 miles to figure out if you hate it or not.

Carradice/other saddle bag with a proper support like the Bagman or OAC Erlen would do the trick.

Just how long is this commute anyway?

Low-trail = less responsive?

I'm using a Soma ES and it's absolutely perfect. I currently have it set with the stem rising up for a more upright position, fenders, 32 tires and a rear rack with a single pannier. I pack fairly light for work, usually just clothes and lunch. Since it's a light load, having the weight on only one side of the bike isn't an issue at all; I can still ride hands free if I want. I also like the flexibility to carry extra stuff if necessary or go grocery shopping on the way home. I did a loaded tour on it last summer and it was fine.

Before this setup, I had it stripped down and with a lower stem and it did fine for weekend fast club rides and several all day centuries. It's just a super versatile bike all the way around.

Low trail (30-40mm) holds its line like a boss. You steer with your hands instead of your hips/body weight. Load up the front and it handles the same instead of wearing out your upper body just keeping the bike tracking where you want. I tried it and loved it for loads or no loads.

If I explore a round-tubed option, this is a real solution.

Noted, thanks.
Why won't it work with the Allez?

Seat post is not round. Anyways, I just picked up that mootry cross. The question now is, transfer this rack/bag, or go to under saddle solution?

I don't think you'll be happy with any front-loaded bike for the type of riding you are looking for without a low-trail geometry. Go the saddlebag route.

The MTX doesn't mount to the seatpost.

I thought it rests on the seatpost. What's the beamrack?

Check out the 700c touring racks that work with the MTX bags. They use stays that mount to rack eyelets (what I did) or you can use P-clamps. No seatpost involved.

I wouldn't try to put any bag on that PM I'd invest in a backpack you can deal with. Osprey would be my choice for great fit. The Mission/Crome/ILE stuff is fine for cruising the city in groove style but Osprey makes superb packs.

Don't mess around with racks and bags, you won't like it.

Me, I ride a couple Gunnars designed to take racks :-)

As nice looking as front mounted rando bags are, I think one of these has far less effect on how the bike handles.
