OldPotatoe's picture might have blocked the tool he uses to qualify length.
Take an old spoke, I use welding wire, or wire coat hanger (do they even have these any more?). Bend each end just past 90 degrees. Hook the ends through the chain links and move one end a link at a time to get that "just right" spot on the rear derailleur. Hold the dangling chain ends together to determine where to open the chain for a quick link or pin.
I don't use a tool..Thread the chain thru the rear der...outside link first...over the top of the small ring, just pull the chain until the rear der spring just starts to tension, eyeball it, put my finger on the link to be removed..put into chain tool and remove link..then either add the pin(shimano and Campag) or snap link..do it a few hundred times and it's pretty easy

Yea I didn't use a tool either. Did exactly what OP said above eyeballing it and using chain tool. Worked on the bike last night and realized I left the chain a link or two too long. In the small cog the pulley was against the cassette. Simple fix and now running smoothly. I've used a 2mm allen key as well to connect the two end links while finding the right length.
