Campagnolo 11 speed and up
I've discussed the issue I'm seeing with a few other Campag aficionado's concerning the spring tension/strength of 11 thru 13 speed rear derailleurs.
I've noticed on my Ekar, my Chorus 12 speed, and my Record 11 speed the derailleur hanger will bend if not beefy enough while shifting thru the cassette. Anyone else seeing this issue or am I the only outlier? Could it be a combo of chainline with "soft" hangers? My Record 10 speed and Chorus 8 speed don't feel as strong at the lever when shifting up and down the cassette and the hanger stays in place no issues. Thanks |

Never had that issue with any of the 11v groups I've run, including two groups on older steel frames, one of those with a Wolf Tooth roadlink.

I've never experienced or heard of this previously.

Huh
The main reason for asking is I swapped out Force 22 for Record 11. The shifting was spot on with SRAM but even after a new hanger the Record RD won't stay indexed. I aligned the hanger, installed the derailleur, indexed, ran thru the cassette a few times, indexing wasn't holding. Rechecked the brand new hanger: bent. My buddy had a similar issue with his aluminum hanger on 12 speed Chorus moving from 10 speed Record. Eventually he got a machined Wheels Manufacturing hanger and the issue went away. I'll go this route too, but thought it was an interesting experience. |

Craziest thing I’ve read on the internets all week.

What frame and hanger?

Same question. I'd say it's a frame/der hanger issue. Put together a LOT of bikes with various systems and haven't seen one consistently bend a Der hanger.

Where might one find a steel hanger? Wheels Manufacturing? |

Yes...I think I picked them up at Wheels Manu. Their website has has a good guide to matching up hangers. Like I said, it is a noticeable improvement.

Anecdotally, the Record EPS v2 groupset that I’m using does seem to have a “soft spring” or something on the 11,12,13ish cogs. When i stop pedaling, the inertia of the cassette is enough to slack the chain and touch the chain stay.
Not an issue that i know of so far. But it definitely does happen consistently |

There are definitely differences in stiffness among derailleur hangers in the wild. The worst I've used are Sunlite, I believe. Which is not surprising. When I can, I like to find one that's been CNCed.

I'd recommend a new hanger, and steel if available. If the current one has been bent/re-aligned already, it has more tendency to get weaker (especially if aluminum).
Most brands tend to supply cheap derailleur hangers as stock, I remember the early Cervelo R3 had awful cheap aluminum hangers. CSC/Cervelo Test Team swapped out those for steel hangers. Many teams also have custom CNC'd hangers or solid/non-replaceable hangers for some frames. |
