I find aesthetics to be way down on the list of my crankset must-haves.

Ultegra is probably the most widely used groupset i actually see on the road. Those 6800 4-arm cranksets are everywhere now and they just look "normal". after a year or so, these will be the same. I dont mind them at all, personally.

I like the dark gray finish of 6800. This new version just looks black...

curious what improvements this actually adds over 6800. I have that group and adore it. it's perfect.

the reviews of 9100 were pretty much "this is marginally different than 9000, proving that Shimano have essentially reached the pinnacle of mechanical groupset performance." so my guess would be that it gets marginally closer to 9000. except that crankset and RD look awfully 9100-ish...

'New' 6800 chainrings compatible with 'older' 6800 cranks? Donno but wouldn't be surprised they weren't..in 4-5 years, going to be able to find 'legacy' 6800 CRs?

that's a good point. would they change the new Ultegra (6900?) and 9100 rings just enough so they don't work with, for example, Quarq 4-arm cranksets any more? you know...to force you to use Shimano's new power meter?

that'd be downright dastardly. people on 9000 and 6800 would not be pleased.

Funny you say that. The new 9100 chainrings don't work with the new Quarq DFour (or the prior Elsa RS).

I wonder if there will be a power meter in the new Ultegra (R8000 series I understand it's called) lineup. If so I have to think that would be the new default first choice power meter, like PowerTap hubs used to be.

Likely still pricier than Power2max, quarq, stages, 4iiii.

I would choose those over R8000.

wow. that's harsh man! who wants to invest in a power meter from a company that changes its chainring compatibility with each gen? meaning...why buy a Shimano power meter then? are we just to blindly believe that it'll work with the next gen or two?

I have an Elsa RS and I'm thinking of selling it now. seems safer to stick with 5 bolt rings/cranks from other manufacturers.

likewise, if you buy a new Ultegra or DA group, immediately sell the crank. changing the bolt pattern every gen is a pretty effed up game to play, IMHO.

Why do all oems have to make the exact same boring polished black groupsets? Will miss the dark grey ultegra branding. I do like the crank. The Shadow rear derailleur still hasn't grown on me tho.
