Zipp Disc; using an 06 track axle on an 04 wheel?
So I've got a 2004 Zipp 900.
I want to use it on the track. Problem: the current track conversion axles don't work on 04/05 discs (they fit only 2006 and newer or Super 9s). The older ones aren't made anymore & they're hard to find. I have an 06 axle (on loan from a friend). The incompatibility is the shoulders** on the axle that but against the bearing faces are 2 or 3 mm too far apart; this lets the axle slide laterally in the hub. It looks like it's a simple issue of adding a couple of spacers. It's a 15mm O.D. axle. I can easily get hardened 15mm I.D. thrust washers or arbor spacers in precise widths which would (I think) work well. What do you think??? ** The shoulder is on the left next to the dust cap.  This is an 04/05 axle.

I'd use a 15mm I.D. "wave" washer in there along w/ your other spacers. My old converted Zipp 950 has a wave washer between the drive side (track threaded side) cartridge and the inside of the hub shell.
That way you can get closer to correct preload on the bearings w/ out over tightening the axle nuts. Just my 2 cents...

FYI - It looks like it'll work. I got a 15mm ID bronze sleeve bearing & cut it to length. I have to redo it though; there's about 1mm of slop right now because I miffed the cut. I made a 1mm brass shim which closes the gap but will likely wear out pretty quickly. But at least I know the spacer theory is O.K.

I'm in the same boat. Did the spacer work out for you? If so, what was your final solution (i.e., length of the spacer) and where did you source the spacer?

OK, here's my solution...
You get one of these http://www.mcmaster.com/#7811k27 and cut off about 3mm* to make a spacer as seen just left of center in the photo below. That's all there is to it. * I say about because I don't recall the exact width. When I made it I started with one that was too big and filed/sanded it down until it fit.
