Using plasticote or bedliner on peeling Thule bars?

I have an old set of bars. The plastic is sort of peeling/shredding. Causes a few challenges sliding them into the rack mounts. Anyone ever recoat them? Seems like it should be possible. Looking for the cheap solution, need not be perfect aesthetically. All suggestions appreciated!

Craigslist for used rack/bars is probably cheapest for time+$. Not sure how much trouble it is worth coating the bars. Thule use a pretty dense plastic to coat the bars initially, not sure if plasticote would stay on for spot treatment.

was.a similar plastic on the clamp fingers of my roof box. It all cracked and fell off so I tried some plasti-dip. It wasn't very durable for how little we've used the box since, but probably not worth the effort to re-coat.

Those coatings will likely be too thick to let parts slide over them.
