Ellen and I used to be manual-only folks. (I remember trying to teach my mum-in-law to drive a stick - unsuccessfully - when our first child - now almost 35 - was born.) I no longer miss it. I ride my bikes more miles than I drive the car anyway. They still have manual transmissions. π those dual clutch systems shift so quickly that I suspect they actually get slightly better mileage than a stick.

They do, on paper, but there's lots of tricks you can do driving a stick that can more than make it up.

Picking up the 2017 GSW 4-motion 6 spd MT today.
Cash in for the swap... a truly unbelievable $2K, including tax...

I thought this was going to be the outcome based on the misery I had going to the Shenandoah Valley last Oct for the Bike Festival: almost an hour of bumper-to-bumper getting on I66 at the Beltway, and then about a half-hour of the same at the other end getting off I66 onto I81. That would have been unbearable in a MT. But just to see if it would be fun, I tried one and I wasn't moved. This isn't like the choice between the 5MT in my 92 Saab 900 vs the pathetic 3-speed auto; here the DSG is a stellar choice. BTW - I seldom manually shifted the DSG in my JSW, other than to control speed on long downhills (e.g., coming over the Blue Ridge from the Shenandoah Valley with a typical automatic if you just let it roll the car's going to get up over 90 and there's a good chance the Sheriff's going to be waiting down there with a radar gun) or to force a downshift without having to open the throttle wide. I have no need to manually shift every gear: the DSG does it every bit as well as I would do with a MT. Quote:

that's pretty comprehensive Palin- thanks!
i am slightly more receptive to the DSG now that everyone has chimed in on it saying they don't miss the 6-speed. |

I have an '05 Passat TDI wagon I bought used at 160K miles. It's somewhat common knowledge that the AT goes out around ~150Kish miles. I shipped to a mechanic in South Carolina who has a strong reputation for his knowledge on these TDIs. He imports OEM manual transmissions from Germany, and installs them. Apparently, it's simple to do.
For the past two years, I've been driving a 5MT, '05 Passat TDI wagon. He put a performance chip in it and it's a quick car. 42ish mpg highway and uber reliable. Apart from replacing a pcv valve just after I got it, I haven't done anything, except change oil. I'm smitten. It's so much more fun to drive than my prior Outback. MT's rule!! |

Quite the step up in feel from my '13 Golf tdi. Love it so far. FWIW, in 40 miles of rush hour, mixed urban and rural driving on the way home, 28 mpg. Interior is nicer than I expected from the brochure shots. The seats have a high quality weave that is a different color than the rest of the seat fabric... pic doesn't do it justice.

I have a DSG and I do shift it manually at times. I don't have 4WD, don't need it with 4 wheel snows, but being able to shift manually is very helpful in slippery weather. I miss my 6MT sometimes, but I could never shift it as fast as the DSG.

These cars do have a very upscale feel. Just about every review I've read or viewed has remarked on it.

However, what you say about fast shifting with the DSG is certainly true -- provided you have not sent confusing and conflicting signals to the transmission so that it preselected the wrong gear. If it's got the 2nd transmission set to the correct gear, all it has to do is switch over to it, and that happens blazingly fast. |
