Options for long reach rim brakes

OK, so I carefully calculated that my new fork would clear a 32mm tire, and that my Chorus 11 speed front brake would reach OK. Drivetrain is full black Campy 11.

DRAT! Brake arms not long enough, pads rub on the tire. Swap in my Shimano R8000 Ultegra brake with 51mm reach...DRAT... literally 1mm too short: One pad is on the rim, the other rubs a l-i-t-t-l-e on the tire.

My research sez that these are options:

BDop Offset Brake Pad Holders - with shipping cost more than some brakes
TRP RG957
Velo Orange Grand Cru Long reach brakes.
SHIMANO BR-R650 57mm reach - can't find 'em
Shimano R451 57mm - same as 650, but pivots are not ball bearing
Tektro R539 47-59 mm
Tektro R737 Caliper Brake Set 47-57 mm

I'll be using the Campy levers, and they worked OK with the BR-R8000 Ultegra calipers on another build, but not sure about compatibility with what I listed. Gotta clear a 32mm tire on 17mm inner width rim. I want to keep the fork, so that's not an option.

I call upon the Cosmic Paceline Conciousness to perceive what have I missed - whatcha think?

I’d get the Shimano or Grand Cru. They work well with Campy and Shimano gives you two q/r levers - nice for fat tires.

of the things that you listed, I am currently running the Tektro R539 on my Carlton Super Course that requires mid-reach calipers. I chose the R539 because they also come in non-recessed (nutted) mounting bolt versions. So far, they are working out for me. I paired them with Tektro levers because my bike needed new levers.

I have the bdop cartridge pads and the design works great.
I actually use them on a bike with trp957 calipers.

If the bdop solution gets you the length you need, I would go that route.

I believe sticking to a mid reach brake, like Tektro 539, rather than long reach, like Tektro 559 will give you better braking. I have done the filing of the pad mounting slots. It took very little time and works well. I would not do it if was much more than the 1mm. I guess that depends on the arms.

There is an knockoff of the BDop offset pad holder. Works a treat, though price has gone up since I bought - now $14. Using mine in a low-stakes, rear centerpull brake situation, so your mileage may vary.

I have the Velo Orange Grand Cru mid/long reach (47mm - 57mm) calipers on my new Zukas and they are great. Also, Velo Orange is running a spring 20% off sale right now. I just checked, and they have both silver and black in stock right now.

I have a Shimano BR-R600 front caliper with a mismatched rear Dura-Ace 7700 set. Came to me on an otherwise Dura-Ace build. The R600 is a little nicer forged in Japan vs Malaysia.

If interested in a trade or purchase, PM me.

thanks,
Taz

+1 on Grand Cru

Run these on my All City Mr Pink. Which is the bike I use when the weather is grim. No problems on hilly wet rides at all. And lots (and lots) of clearance. If you get them on sale (earlier poster mentioned a VO discount code?) that’s a great deal.

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately they only sell pairs, and I need just the front brake.

Not sure why this is being overlooked. Sure seems like the answer to me. I've filed the brake pad slots in the past with great results.

Definitely not overlooked and thanks for bringing that point. It actually may be the best solution since the OP does not want to buy a pair of Velo Orange Grand Cru mid-reach calipers on a 20% off sale because he only needs the front. Filing has zero cost as long as the procedure is controlled and careful.

Cane Creek used to sell the SCR-3L mid reach (47-57) calipers. I have these on an old litespeed Copenhagen with campy 11 shifters and they work well together.

Can still be had used for pretty cheap on eBay:

if HampCo says you can file the brakes, I'd trust it.. I mean how many passes can it take to 1mm off?
