Truing shamal ultras, spoke reatiner ring?

So i picked up a pair of Shamal ultras in trade and the front could use a bit of truing due to a drop or something. when i go to turn the nipples, the entire spoke rotates, but they are bladed so they are meant to face one direction.

Campy mentions a spoke retention tool, and i may pick one up, but is there an alternative to hole the spoke in place while turning the nipples without buying the fancy spoke tool?

if the spoke is ever so slightly bent (most likely the case), can some basic truing bring it close to true again or must a bent spoke be replaced?

loved my first ride on the wheels, and the front is not that out of true (no brake track rub yet), but id like it to be better.

yup, that's my only gripe with the Fulcrum 1 and 0 and Shamals. If you ever need to true them, there's a solid chance the nipple is seized.

correct. and if you've got a model with alloy spokes, you're going to deform/twist the spoke if you try and turn the nipple and hold the spoke.

You can use a ghetto tool, like a vice grip or something but that will marr up the spoke. If it's a little 'barber-poled', it's not dead but extreme, it's stretched and needs to be replaced.

I'd get one of these...but dabble some light lube at the spoke/nipple interface, let sit for a while. I also have a wee bottle of oil with a needle drip end to apply.

Ultra cut a slit in a piece of wood I stole of a wood set toy thingy.

The other one i cut is a piece of plastic pipe...

Find something like 2 or 3 inches long and with a dremel cut s slit.. done..

Seen home made stuff done with PVC pipes... harder to cut but with a dremel is quite quick.

i stopped turning the nipple as soon as i noticed the spoke move as well, so no barber pole effect, in fact the spokes are all straight right now. I am riding into town soon here to see if our shop has a tool. if they do not, i will craft one from wood or PVC. I am digging these wheels, and could see myself grabbing a second set in the future, so would like to be able to do some minor work at least on them.

again, thanks Paceline, you guys are a wealth of knowledge. wish i had you local Peter, I'd just drop em with you for a nice spa treatment. But i like to wrench, so its about time i learned the wheels too.
