OT- Texas Wine Country

Visiting Austin and San Antonio this week. Is it worth the drive out to the Hill Country to try Texas Wine?

Also any other must sees in either city or nearby?

One of our club's sponsors is Becker Vinyards in the Hill Country. Club is Violet Crown if you happen to go. I don't drink and so can't comment on the product. We also have plenty of club rides out of Mellow Johnnys if you want to ride while here.

A bunch of wineries on Hwy 290 between Austin and Fredericksburg. Good riding in Fredericksburg.

donk pal, there are tons of "Must Dos" and "Must See" on the internet, but here's my own personal recommendation.

1) Walk or cycle around lady bird lake in the downtown area (formerly known as town lake) They have bicycles you can rent.

2) Go to Costco... No, seriously. Eat at their cafe, save a ton.

3) Check out Zilker Park

4) Texas BBQ

5) There are tons of walking trails around town.

6) Catch a movie at the Alamo drafthouse or similar with eat-in service

Beauty and the Beast...anyone?

7) If you like water sports or activities...rent a kayak or paddle board on town lake.

That's about all I can think of....

Wines from Becker can be tasted without a trip to the vineyard, but the vineyard is also a nice place to visit. The wild flowers are in bloom and in abundance in that area. Luckenbach is sort of around the corner, which is a good place for local music on the weekend. For hiking on a unique geological formation, http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock is North of nearby Fredericksburg.

In SA, if you like geeky stuff about bourbon & beer http://www.drinkrangercreek.com/. Keeping with the adult beverage theme, http://www.esquiretavern-sa.com/ on the Riverwalk. El Mercado, and http://www.mitierracafe.com/ for Tex-Mex culture. The repurposed Pearl Brewer has a few things of interest http://atpearl.com/. Bike World on Grayson Street next to the Pearl complex has bike rentals, and the location is near hike & bike trails, which lead down to the Missions if that's of interest.

I'm a fan of Mezcal, so my special interest spots for Austin https://www.mezcalreviews.com/mezcal-in-austin/. Beyond that, spinning wheels West of Austin, BBQ South of Austin http://saltlickbbq.com/, and more spinning wheels on curvy Hill Country roads going South and West.

Thanks. Many of the to dos are on our list.

Travelling with an infant so no riding this trip, not even city riding. Plus I'm sure I'm not Texas fit. Our winter was bad.

One more ask especially about mezcal and tequila - best liquor store to buy at? We have a car and don't mind a short drive out of the way.

This is a nice winery: https://stonehousevineyard.com/
If you're into BBQ: http://saltlickbbq.com/driftwood-directions/
You can often find great BBQ in local gas stations
Wimberly and Bastrop area is really nice.
The Nimitz Navy museum in Fredericksburg is amazing

I'm not sure that the wineries are worth the drive, but the drive out to the Hill Country itself is. There are plenty of neat, little towns in the area that have their own unique charm and often times have great restaurants, wineries, and breweries close by. PLUS, the wildflowers are in bloom right now!

A few names for you close to San Antonio - Boerne, Kerrville, Floresville, Fredericksburg, Castroville, Bandera, and New Braunfels/Gruene. Each has a lot of cool history and they often sit on nice little, hill country rivers.

A few names close to Austin - Wimberly, Blanco, Dripping Springs, San Marcos, Llano, Luckenbach, Smithville, La Grange, Serbin, Georgetown (the actual town - not the craziness around it). Also, there are several neat natural parks/areas to see such as the Blue Hole in Wimberley, Krause Springs, and Hamilton Pool. Zilker Park is right in the middle of Austin with plenty of hiking, cold springs, and BBQ/TexMex, coffee, and more within minutes away.

Have a good time! Feel free to send over a PM if you would like to meet up at some point while you're in town.

I will second the Nimitz museum(it's the official national museum of the Pacific War, Admiral Nimitz was a local) there is a fully restored PT boat and WWII airplanes inside. On the way to/from Fredericksburg from Austin is Johnson City. Fatburger has some of the better burgers and sweet potatoe fries around.

Go from San Antonio to Fredericksburg through Sisterdale - Sister Creek Winery makes some great stuff. You can also go through Luckenbach.

Spec's, and Twin Liquors get most of the praise here in Austin, however Total Wine has my two favorite Mezcal spirits, 1) mezcal - Sacrificio reposado
2) mezcal liqueur - Arrogante damiana
Stay thirsty my friend!

Baby did not cooperate today in car. Ended up at freedmans for dinner . Very good.

Tomorrow we're going to San Antonio to hopefully see the spurs beat up on the cavaliers

Back in Austin Tuesday to hang out for rest of week. Hopefully she settles and we can see the countryside. Thinking the trip to wine country try is better than the wines. Maybe a stop at garrison brothers.

Might also check out Willow City Loop, if you head out to the Hill Country.

In case you haven't done it yet, a stop by the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. It's worthwhile. Also, they have a Stevie Ray Vaughn exhibit going on right now. I haven't seen it yet, but hear that they've done a good job. Scholz Garten is a decent, landmark restaurant that's close by.
