I carry a quick link but no QL tool. If the QL breaks (never happened to me) don't need a tool to remove it. If the chain fails, you may need a chain breaker but the new QL can be installed by standing on the pedal.

Another way with chains with a master link to get a clip-type link apart is if your multi-tool isn't completely integrated into one piece you can stick 2 of the smaller allen keys through the chain in the right place and then squeeze them together.

It is nowhere near as easy as with a good tool but it can work in a pinch.

In a pinch a short piece of gear, brake cable or stranded wire and a pair of pliers works well. Dental floss and a set of gloves will also manage the trick, when desperate.
