I live in philly and absolutely hate when it snows here. People have no idea how to drive in it. The city doesn't know what to do with it. It's absolutely nasty a couple of hours after the snow. I can't imagine NYC is any different. Oof.

I felt very differently about it when I lived in MA, especially in central MA.
It's pretty dramatic how bad stock all weather tires become in the first or second snow of the year, which is usually just a few inches. A set with 40-50000 miles could still feel fine in dry and ok in rain, but, can be deadly in snow, especially with a kid or distracted tailgater at the wheel of a 4 ton vehicle. New York locks up immediately, but, thing is, no snow last few years.

I wish it were just the El Niño effect, but this is clearly part of a much larger climate pattern.

February 2024

The average temperature across the contiguous U.S. last month was 41.1 degrees F, 7.2 degrees F above the 20th-century average and ranking as the third-warmest February in NOAA’s 130-year climate record. Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin each had their warmest February on record. An additional 20 states saw their top-10 warmest February on record.

Persistent winter warmth resulted in a steady decrease in ice coverage across the Great Lakes, which reached a historic low of 2.7% on February 11 — the lowest amount of ice coverage on record during mid-February.

The State of the Global Climate 2023 report shows that records were once again broken, and in some cases smashed, for greenhouse gas levels, surface temperatures, ocean heat and acidification, sea level rise, Antarctic sea ice cover and glacier retreat.

Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones caused misery and mayhem, upending everyday life for millions and inflicting many billions of dollars in economic losses.

The WMO report confirmed that 2023 was the warmest year on record, with the global average near-surface temperature at 1.45 °Celsius (with a margin of uncertainty of ± 0.12 °C) above the pre-industrial baseline. It was the warmest ten-year period on record...

And here in the Champlain Valley on the West Coast of NE, also a foot + and coming down. Light powder. Tomorrow is a snow sports day, sure. Happy Spring!

No snow here but sure feels like winter again.

I was bashing through puddles covered in ice on my ride today and was back in pretty much full winter gear. Rode over a long wooden bridge in the woods only to discover the end mostly covered in ice. Kind of a butt pucker moment without studs but turned out to be fine.

A little snow and cold returned in northern Colorado yesterday. It will melt off quickly though. I got in 7 rides in 8 days for 250 miles and 13,500 feet of climbing. I've ridden 1555 miles outdoors this year. That's far ahead of normal.

A local golf course reports 4000 rounds of golf were played this year, compared to zero at the same date in the previous 2 years.

There was a definite absence of snow where we live, since the line between snow and rain stayed just north and west of us, but I still burned a lot of wood trying to stay warm.

I'm currently burning some deadfall ash that I split in January as we speak, and if my lovely wife has any say in it, I will be continuing to light (at least) morning fires.

I had the same thought when I viewed this picture.

Nordic skiing is such a joy, and offers a therapeutic calm that is unparalleled. When snow exists, my bicycle remains on the peg.
