Help . . . I lost the most perfect piece of cycling gear ever made. EVER. Made.
There are many items in my cycling attire that are timeless staples. Assos S5 bibs, craft base layers, the old squadra Castelli long sleeve jersey . . .these items have stood the test of time and their new versions aren't an improvement. However, the best piece of cycling gear I ever owned after 25 years in the sport are these picked-em-up-on-sale from Excel Sports Campy cotton booties. They are . . . out of this world.
Oh I've tried other cotton booties. Castelli Belgium Bootie, Sock guy booties, Sidi, DeFeet, Cappo . . . the list goes on. They work, sort of, on a 45 degree day, but much lower than that and you suffer. Plus they rip, like right away, at the heel. The Campy booties, way heavier, like way more, but still comfy and easy to slip over your shoes. They work at high(er) temps. They work in low temps, 35 degrees, no problem. As long as it's not wet, these work. And they fit . . like a glove. Here is the deal, years ago I lost one. For years I have kept the one I didn't lose. At least 3 times a year I do a search to see if I can find them . . . to no avail. Do you know this bootie, did you have these botties and maybe lost one, too? If so, we can combine and swap every few weeks. They are THAT good. |

This thread warms the heart. And the surströmming reference obviously made me hungry. Really an all around winner.

I have a Campy wool turtleneck base layer my Dad got in the 80s that I wear at least once a week in the winter... God forbid I ever lose that thing.

I guess with 2 pair you are set for life, but really it is time to move on to modern booties. Cotton - really?

Says the guy in Texas!!!!
For reals, don't think for a second I don't have pearl, castelli and LG booties. Velcro, zippers, fleece, goretex blah, blah, blah. A good cotton/wool blend is more comfy and at 90 rotations a minute with a lot of ankle movement in any given rotation these "modern" booties aren't as good as the cloth ones. No way, no how. Now, if it's raining and cold, sure, but just cold. Nope. |

I usually just go to REI or Columbia and buy a couple pairs of XL wool socks.
