My experience is that the bike's headlight can make them freeze instead of spooking as I'd expect.

Interesting that this thread started yesterday as it was on Dec. 16, 2007 that a deer took me out during a ride....Frankly, I don't remember much of the incident....or anything of the following couple of days as I had a pretty good concussion....and a seperated shoulder and broken collarbone. The impact essentially broke my Cyfac in two....

Ouch is right

Deer-my biggest concern and we had a few close calls.

Most incredible experience I had deer wise, local WC summer evening ride in Rock Creek (D.C.), wife and I on tandem, group going about 35 mph on a slight descent. Several deer (wife saw-I was focused on the group) ran through the middle of the group. Those on the trajectory to collide hit the brakes hard and everyone behind including us followed…..not one cyclist went down and the hammering continued.

Years later one of my cycling mates was less fortunate. Riding at dusk he and a deer collided resulting in a broken neck for him. He recovered and is riding today.

flying deer are one of my worst nightmares -- they can really jump. The sight of the deer that used my car as a stepping stone to get across the road is etched in my memory. I'm just glad I had good brakes, he probably would have killed me if I hadn't managed to stop when I saw him jump. With all the motorists that get killed by deer around here, cyclists wouldn't stand a chance.

Last year I had one deer almost hit me 3 times going down a mountain road. It couldn't decide which side of the road it wanted to be on

It's easy to get up to 40+mph on that stretch of road. Glad they guy lived. That will forever be ingrained in my mind while descending into Sausalito.

I've nearly hit so much crap... Deer, cats, cars... I just know someday I'm gonna get it.

I hope that retarded deer died. Probably just got right up and pranced away.

I jumped so bad when that deer hopped out. I was expecting for it to come from the other direction. I can't imagine what was going through his head the second he saw that thing out in front of him! When I was a kid my family was going to my sister's 8th grade graduation in our Volkswagen Super Beetle and a deer plowed into the side of the car almost putting us off the highway. Probably one of the scariest moments of my life.

Scene of the crime via Google street view. Just after the 5th streetlight on the plunge. Now I'm going to be counting every damn time I make the descent.

Very easy in that section. On the Tandem we don't have to pedal much at all to get going at a good clip.

That section of the road off the GGB leading into Sausalito is not normally a cause for concern...other than some occasional loose gravel and having to negotiate around tourists on rentals. That high speed section comes up on a sharp 90 left, as it drops into town. Thats the biggest thing...slow down in time.

Having seen this and cringed like everyone else, that is NOT a place I would be thinking about a deer.
