Mechanical Discs
In the process of putting together a new Gravel project. Going with discs for this, my first 'road' set. Was planning to go with the TRP HY/RD hybrids, but have read several reviews citing soft lever feel with Campy levers. Anyone have a recommendation for or against the HY/RD's or perhaps the Avids or even the full mechanical TRP's??
Thank you in advance!! |

happy with Hayes
I got a set of these recently:

TRP Spyre. Done. Just make sure you use compressionless cable housing.

Full mech = Spyre (been there and done it)
I love my HyRDs but I'm using SRAM levers BK

I haven't used either TRP brake but have used Avid BB5/BB7, Hayes CX5 and Shimano br cx77. I prefer Shimano. Avids were squeaky, both sets of Hayes pulsed (inconsistent friction on the disc, not rotor warping) but the Shimanos are silent and consistent across a wide variety of conditions (cross racing, seattle rain and muck).
Definitely use compressionless housing with whatever you choose. |

We run Campy 10 with Avid BB7 on on of our tandems. It's tight (pad clearance) and since all discs are out of round to varying degrees, you will get tick tick unless you have a disc that's pretty darn round-but when it gets hot….. We use 203 ICE so I would hope smaller discs will have less lateral movement.
Early next year I plan on upgrading this tandem with TRP Spyre calipers. Hoping for more clearance and resulting quieter operation, especially after hard stop from 50mph. |

Any reason why campy levers wouldn't work as well? I thought campy and sram were still using the same level ratio....

Campy 10 speed with Spyre mechanical on tandem. Previously used Avid. They both are adequate. Spyre easier to adjust pad since both sides move but overall not really impressed with much improvement with spyre.

What cable housing have you used? I found switching to compressionless housing totally transformed the brakes.

I have BB7's on two of my bikes. They're ok, but I'd go with Shimano's next go around. Squeals like crazy.

Standard housing, might try compressionless.

You won't be sorry.
I assembled my bike about 13 months ago and the Spyre brakes were recalled almost immediately. I sent them in and a week or so later I got a new set and TRP sent a set of their own compressionless housing. There are other brands but I use theirs. It's very stiff and a bit of a pain in the butt to install but it's not worse than cable housing. It's just sized for brake cables. Before you give up on the Spyres it's worth trying the housing. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. |

No clue - just saying I'm using SRAM so your results might be different

We have a Cannondale tandem with Avids (and Shimano 9s). I put Campy 10s levers on, left everything else stock (housing, cables, derailleurs, much closer ratio cassette). The brakes seem okay although I'm not super picky about the them. They definitely feel a bit spongy. Never really thought about upgrading but now the compression less housing thing intrigues me.
