packing bike wheels

Do you guys make your own box for shipping wheels? I cut mine from a bike box and cut the spacers as shown. the hub wheel gets turned in facing the front wheel with the free hub between the spokes. Usually I can get the box down to 30x30x8 or slightly smaller if the bike box is 7" wide. any alternatives?

i am lucky to have a (now dwindling) stockpile of wheel/frame/bike boxes.

smallest you can make a wheel box for 700c wheels without tires is like 27 x 7 x 32...give or take.

generally, the most important thing to remember is to wrap/pad the hubs...a lot...like, A LOT.
if an end caps is in direct contact with the side of the box, it WILL be poking out by the time its delivered.
yes, even with thru axle hubs.

beyond that, you can pad the top and bottom with some brown paper/newspaper/other filler and stick a little in between the wheels for good measure.

dividers with slots like the above pic are nice if you have em but not really all that necessary if the wheels already have a nice snug fit in the box.
the snugger the fit, the less room they will have to move around/bang into each other/etc etc.

and yea, cutting down a frame/bike box is definitely the way to go, absent a proper wheel box.

As pictured is my preferred method, but sometimes I’ll tape two wheel boxes together, 26x26x12, if that’s what I have on hand. Double cardboard on outside and hub protectors.
