Great thread,
Current faves are from Alpine Beer Company, a popular San Diego spot for a ride up from the coast: Nelson (Golden Rye IPA,) Duet (West Coast IPA,) and Keene idea (West Coast Double IPA.) Great stuff and not easy to find. Best way is growler fill at the shop (panniers.) The Plinys are a go to whenever they're around, too. |

Unintentional omission. BTW, they also sell 22s - this is how you do it if you're riding without panniers

Laurelwood
No IPA list is complete without Workhorse IPA from Laurelwood Brewing in Portland - it stands up there with the best.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16289/41872/ As somebody who has a keg of IPA on tap at all times, I've sampled many from all around the country, and Workhorse may be one I can call my favorite. Tip o' the hat to Russian River, Terminal Gravity, Green Flash, Deschutes Inversion (best readily available in sixers in the NW, hands down), Fort George Vortex (best at Timbers games), Hair of the Dog Blue Dot, and others I can't think of right now. Other than Workhorse, all but Inversion and Terminal gravity have been mentioned already, but worth another shout out. Looking at the Beer Advocate IPA rankings, I must say that I started drinking Bell's Two Hearted when it was introduced in 22oz bottles in the '90s and as much as I love it for sentimental reasons, it doesn't hold a candle to the above mentioned beers. Still have some of those original bottles, in fact, along with some Bells' 1000, 1500, 2000, and 3000 batches saved in the cellar. I think it's safe to say Bells changed my life in the '80s. My favorites so far have been:
Racer 5 from Bear Republic Brewing Co. Populist from Eagle Rock Brewery Moesaic Sessions (it's a "session" beer so it will be lighter/smoother than traditional IPA's) from Black Diamond Brewing Snake Dog IPA from Flying Dog Brewing Blue Dot Double IPA from Hair of the Dog Brewing |

i've had pliny the elder that was really good, most of the ones i've had lately (in the last 8 mos. or so) have sucked.
first few times i had sweetwater IPA it was also really really good, i've had some mediocre ones only time i've ever had anything three floyds, we stopped by there on tour, had the zombie dust in the brewpub (and some awesome brisket tacos btw), it was amazing. bought a whole case of it, was amazing. they gave us a case of some hoppy wheat beer and it was really good too. sculpin is good sometimes. used to like dogfish variations but lately i don't dig those. the lagunitas IPA is pretty ok, sometimes i get annoyed with the yeast flavor but just bought a six pack the other day and the last two i've had have been good. the hop stoopid is awesome if it's fresh. maximus is pretty good too. real ale lost gold is good. 512 IPA is usually pretty good. been digging founders all day IPA lately, nothing crazy, just a good all around IPA. there is a brewery here, austin beerworks that does an IPA rotator series i guess it is, called heavy machinery. all have been solid. the first two were awesome. the last two were pretty ok. oskar blues stuff is pretty good. their imperial red ale i really dig. forget what it's called. |
