So I can put a Shimano cassette on a SRAM drivetrain?

All this time I was poking around for a SRAM 10v cassette, because buddy's cross bike uses Sram Rival. But people are telling me that a Shimano 10 speed cassette should work just fine? What is this devilry? Is this true?

thanks,

This is true. Shimano/SRAM will work with each other.

Brilliant. I'll get my hands on a Tiagra and call it a day.

For 10 speed: Just wanted to add to make sure to have a 1mm spacer on hand for the Shimano cassette. When I swapped my cassette from SRAM to Shimano, the Shimano cassette didn't fit right until I added the spacer.

This is usually true. Slowtwitch has a handy chart and explanation about spacers here

Like a lot of sram stuff, the shimano counterpart works better and is recommended..cassettes, chains, chainrings, front ders...

Never used a SRAM cassette. SRAM x9 9 speed is all I've ever run on my MTBs with a xt cassette. Oh and xt front mech.
All my bikes have SRAM chains. Love the master link!

If you go the other way

and put a SRAM Red 10 speed cassette with the missing tooth technology on a Shimano bike, you may get some chain skip when you stand hard on the pedals, if your rear derailleur cage doesn't wrap the chain far enough around the cogs. That is what I found with a 10 speed Ultegra triple rear derailleur and the Red cassette. You might be able to adjust the B limit screw to fix that, I didn't bother as it was only a short ride. I have seen people use this SRAM Red cassette with a Dura Ace short cage derailleur without a problem.

Me too. 105 on the cross bike, something more expensive for the road.

I've also found that I prefer the shifting of Shimano chains with those Shimano cassettes on an otherwise SRAM drivetrain - precise and silent.
