i tried one out but it was rock hard and could not break it in...even after soaking it in warm water for 15 minutes
my B17's provide better/wider support and break in nicely....without having to waterboard them |

That's what I rode tonight actually - it's a great saddle, very stiff, but I love the shape.

In search of an all-day saddle and I keep getting directed (back) to leather saddles. I have used a B17, which worked ok, and currently ride a Selle Anatomica. I find this saddle a little too "soft," and too wide at the nose.
The Aravis looks like a nice saddle. I also noticed the Aspin, which is ~$100 less and about the same dimensions. What's the difference? EDIT: Nevermind. "The Aspin has stainless steel rails while the Aravis has titanium rails." Last edited by p nut; 08-29-2014 at 10:28 AM. |

With their guarantee why don't you try it? Bill is a super GREAT guy and easy to deal with. Seems to be a no brainer, if you need a new saddle. For questions, you can normally call him at the store. |

I love my GB saddle, but it's such a personal choice that trying one out is the way to go. They do have a break in period, it's stiffer than a Brooks, but once it's softened it will last forever. |

Rivet saddles!

Try a Rivet - they're firmer than a Selle Anatomica but break in nicely

I have three of the steel-railed Aspins. I like them a lot. The leather is quite thick, and they take quite a while to break in, especially compared with the much thinner leather of the B.17; but that's not the only difference between the Berthoud and the Brooks. The shapes are quite different from each other, the Berthoud feeling much narrower at the nose and between the thighs, and you can sit a lot farther back on the Berthoud than you can on the B.17. Actually, the Aspin feels much more like the Team Pro than it does the B.17.

Very good saddles
I have a Soulor saddle and the quality is excellent. It is very narrow so not under consideration here but all of the Berthoud saddles have very good construction. I am very happy with mine.

I would, but I need the width of the B17.

I have normally championed berthoud saddles but for whatever reason the past several weeks have been a pain in the ass. Mine's about 2k miles in, definitely softer than it was new, and was surprisingly comfortable with zero issues for the first 1500 miles. I do change saddle and cockpit set ups kind of often, something might have gone wrong somewhere. I will play with the fore/aft position for a bit longer before i return to to brooks, as the saddle is far superior in terms of construction. (for the record I have the aspin. at the moment it feels like an ass pin.) The saddle prefers to be completely level or just a little bit tilted up.
I switched to the aspin because I was getting chafed by the sides of the brooks during climbs. |
