Ideal rim/tire combo.

I’m looking into swapping some wheel sets. I have one wheel set with a 19mm internal and 27 external width. I’m hoping to run 30-32c tires on it. Does that sound in the ballpark? Thanks.

Running those tires on those rims won't be the absolute fastest option - but will they ride well and pose no real problems? Yep. It's definitely a solid combo for all-rounder type riding.

I run 32s on older, non-assymetrical Boyd Altamont wheels. New versions are 21mm, but I seem to recall that in 2017, they were 20mm IW. That wheel set has seen 30-32 mm tires, but I've noticed that it all depends on brand/model. Schwalbes tended to be on the upper end of size, the Hutchinson Sector 32s were the smallest, and now I have Specialized Roubaix 32s which seem to be in the middle. I like the ride of a tubeless 32, especially on the crap roads around here. I run them at 55-60 psi at my 95Kg of girth.

My carbon wheels have a 22mm IW and I bought a bunch of Panaracer Agilest 28mm tires last year on sale. IME, road Panaracer tires are on the smaller end of the scale, but they really profiled nicely.

I recently mounted 32mm Gravel King slicks on Dura Ace C24 wheels, 15mm internal, and with latex tubes. What a fantastic ride. I did have 26 mm on the wheels, tried the 32 out of curiosity. Sure, the handling and acceleration are a bit slower, but that matters not to me.The high level of comfort is well worth that trade off for me.
I put the 26mm Gk’s on a set of Hed Belgium Plus rims, 6800 hubs, internal width is 18.2 mm. The tires spread out to a hair over 28mm, and they feel like a different set of tires with improved ride. I do not notice any difference in handling or acceleration.
IMO, both changes worked out to my benefit. The C24 and 32’s are on my Soma Smoothie, the Hed and 26’s are now on my Airborne Zeppelin. The Zeppelin gained about a pound due to 32 spoke wheels, the Smoothie’s weight evened out.

The Zeppelin is strictly pavement, the Smoothie gets some easy multi-surface rides, mostly cinder and hard packed dirt, some pea sized gravel, packed sand.

I have a set of wheels with A23 rims (18mm internal I think?) that have run everything from 28mm road tires to 32-48mm tires when I had them on a gravel bike. I wouldn't want to go narrower than that rim width for tires 32mm or greater. Would be curious to try wider rims like Quills too

All things being equal, I think my preference is to go for the widest possible rim that works with a tire, so in this case, I'd prefer something like a 25 mm inner width. But in practice, I ride the wheels I have, and more often than not they are more narrow than I would like, commonly 19 to 21 mm inner, and they're fine.

If this is about rim brakes wheels, going to a 21mm internal-width usually introduces a $100 premium over than more common 18 or 19mm internal-width rims.

If you're riding mostly on pavement, that's a perfect setup. After a lot of trial and error, I've come to the conclusion that 30mm is about the max I'd want on the road. You're not giving up anything on performance, but plenty comfortable.

I found a pair of used DT Swiss wheels with R460 rims (rim brake) with an inner width of 18mm for my Bob Jackson. The Conti GP5000 700Cx32 tires at 55 psi measure 32mm. On the old Mavic Open Pros they were very slightly over 30mm. I think somewhere I read that every 1mm of inner width will generate 0.6mm of tire width increase, so this seems about right in this case. On my Supersix, I went from Mavics at 14.5mm to Farsports at 21mm, and the Agilest 25mm tires gained about 3mm in width IIRC.
